In 25 words or less: What makes Reed special?

This is a test. Please write down your answer and keep in mind that all Reed exams are governed by the Honor Principle.

Now score your answer. Does it include any of these words or phrases? (Award 1 point for each word or phrase found in your answer.)

  • Brain
  • Mind
  • Life of the mind
  • Learning how to think
  • Critical thinking
  • How to ask questions
  • Academics (can be combined with any modifier, but scores only 1 point)
  • Intellectual rigor.

Now check to see if any of the following words appeared in your answer. (Award 5 points for each match. May also award 5 points for other words or phrases that embody the same ideas.)

  • Heart
  • Friendship
  • Community

There is an amazing amount of heart, friendship, and community on this campus. As evidence, I offer you this brand-new YouTube movie showing a large group of Reed College staff (from every part of the campus: Physical Plant, Bookstore, Business Office, Residence Halls, and more) presenting a heartfelt song-and-dance ‘thank you’ to Colin and Joan Diver. And, to clinch my argument, I will point to the Gray Fund which celebrated its 20th anniversary in a huge way last night at the Schnitz. If you were there, you know what I mean.

So if you scored more than 5 points, give yourself a nice pat on the back. You are either still under the influence of the über-intellectual Kool Aid we give to first-time visitors or you really know your way around Reed College.
