Exams

Each 50 minute exam covers roughly 3 complete chapters. Last minute changes in coverage are possible and will be announced.

The final exam is a three-hour exam that covers the entire semester. About half of the final will cover the last chapters discussed in lecture: 10, 11 & 14. The rest of the final will look back at earlier material and also dip into lab-related material, particularly material from chapters 12 (IR spectroscopy) and 13 (1H NMR spectroscopy).

Ground rules for all exams. All exams are closed book, closed homework, and closed notes. All work must be performed by each student working independently. You are encouraged to bring a molecular model kit to each exam (these can be purchased from the stockroom). Calculators and periodic tables will not be permitted. Tables of characteristic spectroscopic parameters will be provided by the instructor if these are needed. Listening devices (music players, cell phones, etc.) will not be permitted. Special accommodations will be made for students with documented needs, but this documentation needs to be provided in advance of the exam.

Old exam archive
Exams (with answers) from Fall 2008 are posted below. A completely different textbook and substantially different course plan (4 chapters/exam) were used in 2008 so don't get too caught up in the details. For example, trying to simulate exam conditions by taking an old exam may not be helpful because of changes in material (especially true for exams #2 & #3). The old exams mainly provide an idea of what o-chem exams look like (type and number of questions).
Exam #1, 2008 - answers (also included conformations of cycloalkanes)
Exam #2, 2008 - answers (also included nucleophilic substitution, elimination, alkyne reactions)
Exam #3, 2008 - answers (also included aromaticity, molecular orbitals, 1H NMR)
Final exam, 2008 - answers (3 hour exam; divided roughly 50:50 between last 3 chapters covered in Fall '08 and review of entire semester)
