Syllabus
My plan is to spend three classes on each chapter of your textbook. The chapter "start dates" are based on this premise. You should also take notice of the following:
- Each 50 minute exam emphasizes the three chapters that precede it, but this subject builds on itself so, in some sense, each exam covers all of the material that came before it.
- I may find it necessary to reduce the coverage of an in-class exam at the last minute. If this occurs, I will announce such changes in class. Please expect omitted material to appear on future exams.
- The final exam appears to cover five chapters, but the division of points is more complicated than that. See the Exam page for details.
- The last five chapters, 10-14, are listed out of sequence. If you read the "starting dates" (tiny print), you will see that chapters 12 & 13 will be covered in lab, while chapters 10, 11, & 14 will be covered in the usual way on M-W-F mornings. Chem 201 lecture-only students should plan on attending the lab lectures/sessions that deal with chapters 12-13.
- Although the material to be covered this semester is spread across different portions of the class, the Big Plan is to cover nearly all of Ch 1-14.
Ch 1 - Chemical Bonding & Chemical Structure - start Aug 31
Ch 2 - Alkanes - start Sept 9
Ch 3 - Acids & Bases. The Curved Arrow Notation - start Sept 16
50 minute exam - F, Sept 25, 9 AM (bring model kit)
Ch 4 - Introduction to Alkenes. Structure and Reactivity - start Sept 23
Ch 5 - Addition Reactions of Alkenes - start Oct 2
Ch 6 - Principles of Stereochemistry - start Oct 9
50 minute exam - F, Oct 16, 9 AM (bring model kit)
Ch 7 - Cyclic Compounds. Stereochemistry of Reactions - start Oct 26
Ch 8 - Introduction to Alkyl Halides, Alcohols, Ethers, Thiols, and Sulfides - start Nov 2
Ch 9 - The Chemistry of Alkyl Halides - start Nov 9
50 minute exam - Th, Nov 19, in conference (bring model kit)
Ch 10 - The Chemistry of Alcohols & Thiols - start Nov 16
Ch 11 - The Chemistry of Ethers, Epoxides, Glycols, and Sulfides - start Nov 23
Ch 14 - The Chemistry of Alkynes - start Dec 4?
Ch 12 - Introduction to Spectroscopy. Infrared Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry - covered in lab lecture, Oct 29
Ch 13 - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy - covered in two lab lectures, Oct 29 & Nov 19, and in the afternoon lab periods, Nov 2-4 (each period will cover the same material)
Final exam - schedule to be determined (bring model kit)
* This is a rough and tentative plan. Exam dates are fixed, but the material covered by the exam is not (see above).
