Adrien has promised me a longer blog entry about the process of writing her 37-page junior qualifying examination, but until it hits my email box, I think I'll let this photo speak for itself. Congratulations, Adrien, on finishing your qual.
Update: Adrien delivered as promised. Read her words after the photo.
Six days, forty pages, and countless cups of coffee later, I have just turned in my junior qual in Sociology. I could probably go on and on telling you about my topic--alternative agriculture movements--but I already did that for the aforementioned forty pages, so instead I'll just say that this is the greatest sense of accomplishment and relief I've had in my time at Reed (can't imagine what I'll feel like after turning in the big T, but that's a whole different discussion). Those hours of work feel all the more special because Lois Hobbs, faculty secretary for the Division of History and Social Sciences and a woman with killer style and an extreme penchant for shoes, just sent me this email:
"Dear Adrien,
I have been accepting Quals from juniors for 28 years, I have to say your cover page is the most impressive. You did a great job, and I suspect the contents are equally as great!
Regards,
Lois"
ULTIMATE SUCCESS. It's like I've already passed (ha...).
Love,
Adrien
Update: Adrien did pass, and writes about it here.
