Peaceful Oases on Reed Campus

Pretty much the entire Reed campus is gorgeous, and there are tons of pleasant places to settle down with the books or friends of your choice.  However, sometimes the go-to places for such activities are too crowded and bustling (commons at lunch, for example, can get quite crazy, and good luck trying to get a picnic table outside when it’s sunny).  The following are some lesser-known cozy/beautiful places around campus where you can retreat when you need to!

1.  The water fountain bench behind Vollum

If you ever get to Hum Lecture early (as unlikely as that may be depending on your sleep schedule), the bench that doubles as a water fountain through the back door of the first floor of Vollum is a wonderful spot to review last night’s reading on a sunny morning.

2.  Upstairs in the student activities office

The Student Activities Office is an all-around great place.  While most students know that it is home to numerous student resources, free snacks, and Gray Fund lottery sign-ups, the student activities office also has a lesser-known upstairs spot containing a craft room as well as super comfy chairs with a window view of the canyon.

3.  Canyon chess table

A whimsical and picturesque spot in the canyon to enjoy by yourself or with friends over a game of chess.  I won’t tell you exactly how to get to this one, explore our lovely canyon to find it :).

4.  Downstairs GCCs Benches/Amphitheater

For when you just can’t deal with finding a table in commons at lunch: I offer you an indoor and an outdoor alternative, depending on the season.  Head downstairs in the GCCs and turn right at the bottom of the stairs.  You will see windows with bench window seats.  These are a great spot to sit and look out at the world undisturbed.  If the day is simply too lovely to stay inside, head out the door at the bottom of the stairs.  The Amphitheater offers tons of seating and a gorgeous view of the canyon.
