What’s Cooking in Summer Housing: Part 1

As a student in summer housing, it’s a huge change to go from eating all my meals at Commons to suddenly cooking for myself.

While the kitchens in the residence halls are great for occasional snack preparation, it’s difficult to see how each one could be the full-time primary prep site for about 15 hungry people. So how do we do it?

Pretty creatively, actually. Very few people in summer housing subsist primarily on ramen; in fact, many of them are happy to have the opportunity to prepare food to their own liking, even if it means that the kitchens get a little crowded. Some of us even try to tackle a recipe we’ve never dared before!

Cristobal, one of the summer HAs, seized the moment and created his own take on pupusas, a cross between a tortilla and a tamale. After being inspired by a Portland restaurant, Cristobal and his friends learned by trial and error to make delicious cheesy goodness.

For my part, I tried out a new burger recipe. I mixed together bulgur, ground beef, dried cherries, and onions to make the patties, and topped them off with lettuce, onions, brie, lettuce, and sourdough.

Food is best when shared, and both Cristobal and I offered our finished products to friends so our creations would be even more appreciated!

Sequoia’s Trip to the Painted Hills

Last weekend, Sequoia ventured East to explore the Painted Hills!

After a close encounter with private property rights, we finally arrived at the John Day beds. The Painted Hills are named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain. Different layers allude to vegetative matter, mud, silt, and shale, and fossil matter. Very cool.

After some windy hiking, we set up camp, practiced skipping stones, and made dinner. We all fell asleep, bellies full, gazing at the sort of sky that is so filled with stars it’s almost looks grey. It was a wonderful way to spend the weekend and celebrate another year at Reed.

Meet your Resident Directors: Nick!

Front desk worker Carly got the lowdown on Resident Director Nick, the newest member of our Residence Life staff.

nick_interview

Nick at Angel’s Rest just outside of Portland, near Multnomah Falls.

Carly: What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever googled?

Nick: One of the weirdest things I’ve googled is “human being”. The first thing that pops up is a Wikipedia definition and it’s so interesting to look at an encyclopedia definition of human beings.

C: How would you describe your undergraduate experience?

N: Silly would be my response, but silly in a good way. Fun people and fantastic courses.

C: What is your biggest pet peeve?

N: When I know that people are blatantly lying and when I attempt to correct them, but they insist that they are right.

C: Who would direct your biopic?

N: I would have to say Charlie Kaufman. He wrote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, but he made his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York. They’re all existential, but so good.

C: What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

N: The best advice I’ve ever received is to really think about why you’re doing what you’re doing simply because if you don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

C: What TV shows have you most recently binge-watched?

N: I just binge watched “House of Cards,” a murder investigation series called “Broadchurch” with David Tennant (known for being the tenth Doctor Who), and “Hannibal.”

C: What is your favorite restaurant in Portland?

N: The Screen Door.

C: What kind of food is it?

N: Soul food.

C: What do you get there?

N: I like to get the fried chicken and sweet potato waffle. The grits…everything…it’s just delicious.

Bal-Folk Was Bananas

The German and French Language Houses collaborated on the Spring Bal-Folk Event which took place on April 19th in the Quad.
We provided some authentic German cuisine in the form of Otto’s Sausages, bayerischer Kartoffelsalat (Bavarian Potato Salad), a selection of Artisan Mustards, and a strawberry cream cake to top it all off. We started with 150 Hot Dogs and 40 Veggie Dogs, and every one of them was eaten!
We also brought a traditional French Band who put on a great show, and hosted a dance workshop in the SU.
All in all, it was a great success! Thanks for coming everybody!

Sullivan Gets Informed

DSC_0669

This semester, residents of Sullivan 2 have become strangely aware of the goings-on inside and outside of the Reed Bubble.
As it turns out, Reedies tend to forget that there’s anything but the dorm, the library, and Commons. To remedy this, news stories everywhere from the dorm to deep space have begun popping up weekly.
We’ve been informed about new planets, missing planes, upcoming Reed events, and even the odd fact or two about our residents. Without the weekly news, how would we know about Chelsea Clinton’s baby or which of our fellow residents was in show choir in high school? These are the important issues of today!
Residents wait with bated breath for every issue of the Weekly News. The latest buzz is all about the upcoming weekly segment: Heartfelt Country Song of the Week. Hard-hitting journalism: that’s what Sullivan 2 is all about.

Stop Making Sense is upon us!

It’s that time of year. The end of spring semester, when all of a sudden you realize that there are two weeks left of classes and ten-weeks’ worth of things to do. Since nothing makes sense, there’s only one thing we can do: Stop Making Sense.

Old Dorm Block gets BAKED: Pottery and Pastries!

Alaïa and I, both HAs in Old Dorm Blocks, brought our dormies on a day trip to the Pearl district downtown. After a quick drive across the river, our first stop was the Museum of Contemporary Craft. On display was This Is Not A Silent Movie: Four Contemporary Alaska Native Artists, a feature presented by different Alaska Native artists whose “groundbreaking contemporary works question institutional methods of identifying Native heritage, examine their own mixed-race identities, and challenge perceptions and stereotypes about indigenous peoples.” My favorite was one of the walrus ivory figurines by Susie Silook, Ice Incantation [picture included]. In addition to the Alaskan native art, the MCC featured British Ceramics, and  one of the local artists was actually throwing (as in creating, not hurling) ceramic pieces downstairs in the gift shop!
Once we had finished up at the museum, we walked over to Pearl Bakery to enjoy a delicious afternoon snack. I got a decadent brownie, but others bought sandwiches, cookies, and other baked goods. With our minds and bellies full of new goodies, we returned to the van and back to campus, all glad that we had the opportunity to escape the bubble on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Woodbridge “Godfather” Pasta Dinner: A Visual Story

This week Woodbridge got together and had a big dinner of pasta and tomato sauce and watched Francis Ford Coppola’s classic, “The Godfather, Part II.”

Our resident Cheesemaster does one of the things he does best.

Ingredients prepped and ready to go. We didn’t have a lid big enough for the pot we borrowed from commons, so we used a baking sheet instead.

Commons Hacks Round 2

I will begin by saying that a lot of these hacks are ridiculously simple. BUT I think they also show how you can get ~*~*creative*~*~ at Commons without spending too much time trying to get your concoction together.

So here it is.

Nachos

Sometimes you feel like eating something greasy and absolutely stomach-turning and you, unfortunately, do not have time for/access to Taco Bell. Resolve this horrible affliction by making your own NACHOS.

Get some sour cream and salsa from the gluten-free station. Get olives and cheese from the salad bar. Grab some Doritos and a plate. You know where this is going. Nuke it all together. Nachos! Like the kind you would buy at your neighborhood roller rink as a wee child. Revel!

Zesty-Hot!
