English Holly

Scientific Name: Ilex aquifolium
Genus: Ilex
Family: Aquifoliaceae

English Holly

A tall shrub or small tree to 20 feet with glossy green, spiny foliage, and red berries borne on female plants. It is native to Europe. Many varieties are present on the Reed campus. Male plants have no berries but in the spring have small blossoms with pollen.

The area around the language dorms on Woodstock once contained many English Holly trees that were thought to be remnants of a tree nursery that once existed on the site. Most of those trees were removed in the summer of 2002.
