It includes among its members professional archaeologists, students, and people from all walks of life,\u00a0all\u00a0of whom share a passion for understanding the human past. Today, the AIA has 111 societies throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Portland&#8217;s AIA society was chartered in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>To promote new research, the AIA provides\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/grants\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>fellowships, scholarships, and grants<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to support young scholars, undergraduate fieldwork,\u00a0promote archaeological publications, and to support excavations. The AIA\u00a0organizes an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/annualmeeting\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Annual Meeting<\/strong><\/a> at which the results of the latest research are presented and discussed, and publishes\u00a0the highly respected <span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>American Journal of Archaeology<\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">.<\/span><\/span> To reach the public, the AIA\u00a0produces\u00a0<strong>ARCHAEOLOGY magazine<\/strong>, and the Archaeology website, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeology.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.archaeology.org<\/a><\/strong>, with exclusive features and reviews, daily archaeological headlines from around the world, and our Interactive Digs, which actually take you into the field.<\/p>\n<p>The AIA&#8217;s\u00a0other outreach programs include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/tours\/programs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AIA Tours<\/strong><\/a>, with in-depth land tours and small-ship cruises to archaeological sites worldwide, all led by experts.\u00a0 Society Outreach Grants provide AIA local Societies with a means to expand public awareness through archaeology fairs, workshops and other events. The AIA also organizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/archaeologyday\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Archaeology Day<\/strong><\/a>, which now reaches over 100,000 people each October through hundreds of events across the globe. \u00a0The AIA has long been a powerful voice against looting and the illicit trade in undocumented antiquities and for the preservation of archaeological sites, monuments, and artifacts; since 2007, the AIA has been awarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/sitepreservation\/grants\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Site Preservation Grants<\/strong><\/a>, and is currently supporting projects across five continents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You may join the AIA as a regular member or student member<\/strong>.
