California-Berkeley. His presentation was titled, <a href=\"editor-content.html?cs=UTF-8\"><b>&#8220;Selective Stoichiometric and Catalytic Reactions in Water-Soluble Host-Guest Supramolecular Systems&#8221;<\/b><\/a>.<br \/>\nBergman pointed out that most of the research in this area is performed<br \/>\nin collaboration with scientists in other research groups at Berkeley,<br \/>\nbut I was completely unprepared to see &#8220;R. LaLonde&#8221; listed as the lead<br \/>\nauthor on one of the projects described by Bergman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;R. LaLonde&#8221; is none other than <b>Rebecca (&#8220;Becky&#8221;) LaLonde &#8217;01<\/b>. A little investigatory work at the web site of her dissertation adviser, <b>Prof. Dean Toste<\/b>, led me to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cchem.berkeley.edu\/toste\/alumni.html\"><b>alumni page<\/b><\/a> and the following information: &#8220;Rebecca got her Ph.D. in 2010 and is currently working at DOW in Philidelphia.&#8221; (sic)<\/p>\n<p>And the lucky encounters just keep piling up. A week ago I visited Vancouver, BC to attend the 2012 AAAS annual meeting. I had a little <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/2012\/01\/alan-shusterman-and-dan-gamelin-90-elected-aaas-fellows\/\"><b>personal business<\/b><\/a> to attend to, but as I prepared to step on to the escalator at the convention hall, who should step off but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/kate-stoll\/12\/a50\/bb7\"><b>Kate Stoll &#8217;04<\/b><\/a>. &#8220;Dr. Kate&#8221; earned her Ph.D. work in biochemistry at U. Washington back in 2010. Then, after a brief postdoc, moved to Washington, DC, where she is currently working as an <a href=\"http:\/\/fellowships.aaas.org\/04_Become\/04_Eligibility.shtml\"><b>AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow<\/b><\/a> at the <b>National Science Foundation<\/b>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of this month I attended a lecture at the University of Portland that was given by Prof. Robert Bergman, U.
