{"id":4596,"date":"2015-05-14T23:39:09","date_gmt":"2015-05-15T06:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/?p=4596"},"modified":"2015-05-14T23:39:09","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T06:39:09","slug":"promoting-peace-understanding-through-environmental-chemistry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/2015\/05\/promoting-peace-understanding-through-environmental-chemistry\/","title":{"rendered":"Promoting peace &amp; understanding through environmental chemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Summer grants promote peace &amp; understanding | Sallyportal, 5 May 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/posts\/2015\/davis-mcgill-summer-2015.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Nine Reed students have won grants<\/strong><\/a> to pursue summer projects to promote peace and strengthen understanding, and two of the projects feature environmental chemistry.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"content_main\">\n<div style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/assets\/images\/2015\/Celebrity_Nyikadzino_davisprize_meredithdickinson.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/assets\/images\/2015\/Celebrity_Nyikadzino_davisprize_meredithdickinson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Environmental studies-chemistry major Celebrity Nyikadzino \u201917 won a $10,000 grant to help villagers in Zimbabwe lift themselves out of poverty.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Celebrity Nyikadzino \u201917<\/strong>, an environmental studies-chemistry major, was selected for a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/beyond-reed\/seeds\/volunteer\/davis-peace-projects.html\" target=\"_blank\">Davis Projects for Peace<\/a><\/strong> for her project \u201cA Step toward Hope: Education and Self Reliance.\u201d Celebrity will be implementing the project this summer\u00a0in Chivhu, her home village in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up with many talented kids by my side,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Unfortunately, most of my friends had to drop out of school because they could not afford the cost of education.\u201d Celebrity intends to use the $10,000 award to address poverty by teaching community members how to sew and also how to market and maintain a business using the finished products. Her goal is to create ways for families to have the means to return their children to school and to keep them there. \u201cI also aim to bring my community together through cooperation in the project, and by creating a support group for sharing struggles and successes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2007, Davis Projects for Peace has welcomed proposals from undergraduate students (including current seniors) for projects that they will implement during summer break. The projects judged to be the most promising and do-able are funded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Tsang \u201918, environmental studies-chemistry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/assets\/images\/2015\/Joshua_Tsang_mcgill15_meredithdickinson.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Joshua Tsang\" width=\"277\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, Josh will be working with a Portland environmental nonprofit, <a title=\"We Love Clean Rivers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.welovecleanrivers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>We Love Clean Rivers<\/strong><\/a> to conduct water quality monitoring in rivers around Portland and to organize several clean\u00adup events along those rivers. \u201cWLCR helps combat water pollution and assists in raising the standard of water quality across Oregon by broadening community engagement with river restoration activities and increasing the recreational water\u00adsports community\u2019s understanding of threats to watershed health.\u201d By working with WLCR\u2019s team to both conduct scientific research and raise awareness for the local environment, Josh hopes to better understand the science and policy sides of environmental issues.
