{"id":4683,"date":"2015-09-15T17:27:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T00:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/?p=4683"},"modified":"2015-09-15T17:27:48","modified_gmt":"2015-09-16T00:27:48","slug":"stressed-in-grad-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/2015\/09\/stressed-in-grad-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Stressed in Grad School?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest issue of C&amp;E News (Sept. 14, 2015), the American Chemical Society&#8217;s news magazine, contains an article with the intriguing title, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/93\/i36\/Opening-Stress-Graduate-School.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Opening Up About Stress in Graduate<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/93\/i36\/Opening-Stress-Graduate-School.html\" target=\"_blank\"> School.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0It almost goes without saying that the opportunity to do graduate-level research in your profession is incredibly rewarding. It&#8217;s tempting to think, therefore, that whatever the personal costs of this education might be, they must be worth it, but that is an open question. As the article points out:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a title=\"Stress and Relief for American Graduate Students: Results from a Nationwide Survey\" href=\"http:\/\/gradresources.org\/wp-content\/themes\/twentyeleven\/docs\/woodberry2010.pdf\">According to a 2011 survey<\/a> by the nonprofit group <a title=\"Grad Resources\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gradresources.org\/\">Grad Resources<\/a>, 43% of U.S. graduate students who participated reported experiencing more stress than they could handle. And a 2014 study conducted by the Graduate Assembly of the University of California, Berkeley, found that 47% of UC Berkeley Ph.D. students who responded to the survey reached the threshold considered to be depressed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few voices from the C&amp;E News article:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI had a very difficult time seeing myself in a positive light [during graduate school],\u201d Karen Chiang, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of grad school stress on mental health is something that nearly everyone experiences, but it\u2019s never really talked about openly, for fear of perceived weakness.\u201d <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.notthelab.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vinylogous blog<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the most confident among us are prone to anxiety and worry in graduate school.\u201d <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemjobber.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chemjobber blog<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just trying to be everything to everybody, and what started happening was that I couldn\u2019t sleep anymore. I was just worrying all night long.
