Undertaken with support from a faculty adviser, the senior thesis is your opportunity to explore a problem or answer a question that holds particular significance for you. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/apply\/academics\/thesis.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>read more<\/strong><\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"lead\">For some seniors, this adventure may be more than &#8216;intellectual,&#8217; it may also involve coming face-to-face with&nbsp;a life-threatening disease that attacks millions of humans every year: malaria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">This year one member of the Class of 2017, <strong>Rose Gonoud<\/strong>, took advantage of a special opportunity to synthesize anti-malarial drugs in the experimental chemotherapy laboratory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/xd\/education\/schools\/school-of-medicine\/departments\/basic-science-departments\/molecular-microbiology-and-immunology\/labs\/riscoe-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Prof. Michael Riscoe<\/strong><\/a> at OHSU. You can read more about Rose and how this came to pass at&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/posts\/2017\/chem-major-fights-malaria.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Chem major battles malaria parasite<\/a><\/strong><strong>&#8220;<\/strong> (Sallyportal blog, 24 Apr 2017).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/reed_magazine\/sallyportal\/assets\/images\/rose-gonoud-17.jpg\" alt=\"Rose Gonoud '17\" width=\"300\" height=\"399\"><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rose Gonoud &#8217;17<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To give full credit where credit is due, Rose&#8217;s opportunity came about when <strong>Lisa Frueh &#8217;15<\/strong>,&nbsp;a Reed chemistry alum who was working in the Riscoe lab, approached&nbsp;her supervisor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/2013\/03\/aaron-nilsen-microbe-hunter\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dr. Aaron Nilsen<\/strong><\/a> [chemistry, 2013-14], with a crazy idea: if Nilsen and Riscoe would provide lab space and a project to a current Reed senior, Frueh would volunteer to provide day-to-day training and direction in laboratory procedures for Rose on top of her regular duties.<\/p>\n<p>The Gonoud-Frueh partnership worked beautifully from Day 1. As Lisa told me by email, <em>&#8220;It was such a fun and rewarding experience&#8211;being in a teaching\/mentor position always reminds me why I love the scientific process and being in the lab.&nbsp;<\/em><em>Congratulations on sending another class of qualified chemists out into the world!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Reed thesis?
