Prof. Richmond is one of those very special scientists who can work on a broad scale, achieving international recognition as an advocate for women in science (she is the\u00a0founder and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/coach.uoregon.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>COACh<\/strong><\/a>, a grassroots organization that has been assisting in the advancement of thousands of women scientists around the globe since 1997) and as a global leader\u00a0in surface science, in particular, environmentally and technologically important processes that occur at water, semiconductor, and mineral <a href=\"http:\/\/richmondscience.uoregon.edu\/water-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>surfaces<\/strong><\/a>. <em>(<strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> The American Chemical Society has just announced that it is awarding its top honor, the 2018 Priestley Medal, to Prof. Richmond for &#8220;her pioneering contributions to our understanding of the molecular properties of liquid surfaces and her extraordinary service to chemistry on a global level.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/95\/i24\/Geraldine-Richmond-named-2018-Priestley-Medalist.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C&amp;EN, 7 Jun 2017<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Prof. Richmond will be delivering a special lecture, <a href=\"http:\/\/events.reed.edu\/event\/empowering_global_scientific_engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>&#8220;Empowering Global Scientific Engagement,&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> on Tuesday, August 22 at 4:30-6:00 pm, Psychology 105.<\/p>\n<p>Previous Vollum Awardees from the chemical sciences have included:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2010 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/xd\/health\/services\/cancer\/about-us\/druker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Druker<\/a>,\u00a0Director, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute &#8211; developer of the anti-cancer drug, Gleevec<\/li>\n<li>2008 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/14\/business\/kenneth-koe-co-inventor-behind-zoloft-dies-at-90.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenneth Koe<\/a> &#8217;45, Pfizer &#8211; developer of Zoloft<\/li>\n<li>2002 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cchem.berkeley.edu\/knrgrp\/knr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenneth Raymond<\/a> &#8217;64, U.
