{"id":5306,"date":"2019-01-16T17:55:43","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T01:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/?p=5306"},"modified":"2019-01-16T17:55:43","modified_gmt":"2019-01-17T01:55:43","slug":"x-ray-diffractometer-is-operational","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/2019\/01\/x-ray-diffractometer-is-operational\/","title":{"rendered":"X-ray Diffractometer is Operational"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past 20+ years, students doing crystallography projects in Prof. <a href=\"http:\/\/people.reed.edu\/~glasfeld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Arthur Glasfeld<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s [1989-] lab have relied on\u00a0instrumentation made available to them by generous friends at OHSU. \u00a0That will remain true, except the OHSU instrumentation will now live at\u00a0Reed. \u00a0As the structural biologists at OHSU have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ohsu.edu\/2018\/05\/15\/ohsu-one-of-three-centers-selected-to-study-cells-at-atomic-level\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shifted to electron microscopy<\/a>, thanks in large\u00a0part to an NIH national facility housed at the university, the x-ray set-up was no longer getting\u00a0much use. Through the generosity of <strong>Peter Barr-Gillespie &#8217;81<\/strong>, the chief research\u00a0officer at OHSU, the instrument was donated to Reed this Fall. Together with <strong>Randy Hicks<\/strong>\u00a0(laboratory &amp; department manager) and <strong>Rob Jensen<\/strong> (instrumentation chemist), Arthur spent the\u00a0early part of this month setting up the device in its new home in the Chemistry building.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/files\/2019\/01\/2019-Glasfeld-xray-diffractometer.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5310\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/chemistry_news\/files\/2019\/01\/2019-Glasfeld-xray-diffractometer-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Arthur describes the instrument and its capabilities as follows: &#8220;We now have a fully functional single crystal x-ray system with a cryo-system for flash cooling crystals and doing data collection at cryogenic temperatures. Four successful data sets have already been collected from test protein crystals and from the independent study project of <strong>Dorothy Cheng \u201920<\/strong>.
