Can it be explained in 1-3 sentences?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a time limit to the project? If so, time out the project with a voiceover; diagram out themes. If timing is within the project parameters, go to #7.<\/li>\n<li>Listen for any redundant\/slang\/awkward statements.<\/li>\n<li>Show, don\u2019t tell.<\/li>\n<li>Look for too many examples that show a topic, or if the sequence is too long to explain a topic, and loses the viewer&#8217;s interest.<\/li>\n<li>Go back to #2 &#8211; how\u2019s the time now? Too long? Repeat steps 4-6 \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>Work on visuals (use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ken_Burns_effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Ken Burns effect<\/a>, or use other media).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>More Editing Tips and Tricks!<\/h2>\n<h2>Voiceover tips<\/h2>\n<p>Think of voiceover as reading a poem (i.e., \u201cexpressive reading\u201d):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give pause to statements and commas\/periods.<\/li>\n<li>Give inflection to voice, rise with a question, drop with a statement.<\/li>\n<li>Place emphasis on keywords or phrases in the text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Transitions<\/h2>\n<p>Many people\u2019s go-to transition is a cross dissolves. Use jump cuts as well, such as at the\u00a0 end of a sentence or statement, or &#8220;on the beat\u201d, such as when a note is struck in the music, or a word is spoken in the narrative.<\/p>\n<h2>Cues for a new chapter\/idea\/section<\/h2>\n<p>These are just possible cues to help the viewer change to a new topic &#8211; there\u2019s always more to discover. And experiment with using a few together.<\/p>\n<h3>Audio<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Music cues &#8211; change music to different tone\/instrument.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of sound &#8211; end on strong statement, give 1 second pause.<\/li>\n<li>Long strum of guitar can indicate an ending or a beginning (ken\u2019s at 1:36).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Visual<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Fade to black.<\/li>\n<li>Hold on still image for 1 second.<\/li>\n<li>Titles can indicate new chapter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Titles<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep titles short, and have them display long enough to read out loud; try to not have voiceover or motion during this time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>End credits<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t use bold.<\/li>\n<li>Use italics for books, magazines, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Call to action on its own slide at the end of the credits, such as a\u00a0website url.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Possible editing workflow<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Focus on tightening up the edit (edit down to the approximate time allotted for the project, if there is one).<\/li>\n<li>Work on finalizing composition of images. Break up shots; don\u2019t use Ken Burns every time, try to use other media or clips..<\/li>\n<li>Work on transitions between scenes.<\/li>\n<li>Adjust volume levels (make sure all voices are at same levels, have quick fade up\/down at beginning\/end of audio clip as needed, sound duck music when voice over occurs).<\/li>\n<li>Work on pacing.
