{"id":13,"date":"2014-01-21T15:26:20","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T23:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/quantblog\/?p=13"},"modified":"2025-03-27T09:27:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T16:27:43","slug":"getting-in-the-map-21jan14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/ed-tech\/2014\/01\/getting-in-the-map-21jan14\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop: Getting IN the map"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The more I work with all-things-spatial, the more I want to infuse this sort of work across campus &#8212; maps as data visualizations, spatial context as framing for questions and answers, spatial patterns as answers and questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Paideia seemed an excellent opportunity to test-drive some ideas and spread the Gospel of Spatial Framing (or was that The Good Word of The Geospatial?) to an eager and willing audience. A total of 23 people joined me for an hour-long workshop, where we covered what I decided were some necessary basics &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is a GIS and, what does it do? What kinds of questions can you ask with a GIS?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does geospatial data look like, and how is it different from possibly-more-familiar tabular data?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Points to ponder when conducting spatial analysis OR when consuming maps:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>distortion, representation and projections\/coordinate systems (aka &#8220;<a title=\"Goode Homolosine\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Vrn2zV5sb0I\/UoK_J-EZ7xI\/AAAAAAAAC20\/a1kIyXbmgkg\/s1600\/op_goodehomolosine_text_uaf_sm.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the orange peel\u00a0<\/a>problem&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>data aggregation (for a clear example of the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem, aka &#8220;bins matter&#8221;, see these <a title=\"Mejn maps\" href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~mejn\/election\/2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 election results <\/a>maps)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>normalization (<em>That choropleth you keep using&#8230;I do not think it means, what you think it means;\u00a0<\/em><a title=\"Alignstar normalization\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alignstar.com\/support\/clients\/webhelpv5\/Normalizing_your_data.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one example<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant technologies, with nods both to Esri&#8217;s analytical workhorse <a title=\"Esri + ArcGIS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArcGIS<\/a> (for which we have a site license) and the cross-platform, open-source <a title=\"qGIS homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qgis.org\/en\/site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qGIS<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two
