{"id":2140,"date":"2014-01-23T16:08:44","date_gmt":"2014-01-24T00:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/ed-tech\/?p=2140"},"modified":"2015-01-23T15:36:45","modified_gmt":"2015-01-23T23:36:45","slug":"workshop-introduction-to-stata-paideia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/ed-tech\/2014\/01\/workshop-introduction-to-stata-paideia\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop: Introduction to Stata"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My introduction to Paideia teaching was a grey Thursday in January 2013 &#8212; blessed be that first batch of students, for they were patient with the initial out-of-the-gates lecture, which I&#8217;ve since refined considerably.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For this year&#8217;s Paideia runs (two classes of ~10 people each) I restructured my approach a bit, added the <a title=\"KimBott OKCupid data\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/evee746\/okcupid\">OKCupid data <\/a>that Albert and I used in the Introduction to R class, and tinkered with content as one does when (a) teaching and (b) being of the &#8220;can&#8217;t leave well enough alone&#8221; school.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the usual slides (useful visuals and reference), I directed students to our <a title=\"Stata @ Reed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/CIS\/help\/software\/stata.html\">own Stata page<\/a> for starters, and the truth of the classic <a title=\"xkcd\" href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/627\/\">xkcd tech support char<\/a>t for all matters going forward.<\/p>\n<p>Next time around I&#8217;ll add a *.do file to work through, since that was a great tool in Albert&#8217;s class and removed the complications of having to type in commands.
