They were hoping I could help them identify <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how many homes are within the Johnson Creek floodplain.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is certainly a spatial problem, so using some spatial system &#8212; in this case, a GIS* &#8212; is a good first step. Another important challenge as researcher is to translate your question into something your analytical tool can understand.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know we are looking for a <\/span><b>count<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&#8230;homes\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two pieces here: (1) how do we know <\/span><b>where<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the homes are? (data issue) &nbsp;(2) what do you mean by <\/span><b>home<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? (definition issue)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&#8230;are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the entire property need to be <\/span><b>in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the floodplain? Is a small chunk of the property enough? What if just the border of the property and the floodplain overlap?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<em> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&#8230;the Johnson Creek floodplain?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is this defined? 500-year, 100-year? Who delineated the floodplain, and what models or information did they use to identify the floodplain boundaries? These may seem like pesky details, but it is important to be specific when defining your question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is simple enough, and the two parts of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (where are they, how do we define home) are fairly easy to resolve from the Portland <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rlisdiscovery.oregonmetro.gov\/?action=viewDetail&amp;layerID=41\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taxlot data available via RLIS <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1]. If you look at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rlisdiscovery.oregonmetro.gov\/metadataviewer\/display.cfm?meta_layer_id=41\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metadata for the taxlot dataset <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[2], you may note a LANDUSE field, which includes multifamily residential (MFR) and single family residential (SFR) categories; this takes care of \u201cwhat is a home\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things get a bit more complicated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What does that even mean? How do we know if we are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an area\u2026 or not? Welcome to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dimensionally extended nine-intersection model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DE9IM), which provides a concrete way to evaluate spatial relationships. A single point of contact provides zero dimensions of overlap, a shared line yields one dimension, and a shared area (polygon) represents two dimensions of overlap. Below you can see this represented in both set notation and graphics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DE9IM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-810 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DE9IM.png\" alt=\"de9im\" width=\"912\" height=\"682\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DE9IM can help us examine some different definitions of \u201cwithin\u201d &#8212; if you are using ArcGIS\/Esri software, you are given three variations on the theme of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The words used in ArcGIS may or may not be intuitive; below is a visual that should help parse the Esri \u201cwithins\u201d. (h\/t<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RhoBott\/status\/788810834747154432\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> @nizxusehen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/withins.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-809 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/withins.png\" alt=\"withins\" width=\"911\" height=\"682\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the students decided that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not the spatial relationship they were looking for, but instead <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intersect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rationale: the homes (or rather, the tax lots containing the homes) do not have to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully contained<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the floodplain; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any contact<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the floodplain is sufficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having identified their houses of interest, the students are now ready to dive into questions about those houses and their occupants. What is the value of the potentially-affected properties (houses, land)? Who lives in these floodplain homes?
