{"id":15,"date":"2016-06-13T14:45:42","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T21:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/leoconvenings\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2022-06-27T13:39:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T20:39:26","slug":"about-the-conference","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/leoconvenings\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview of the Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stewards of Democracy Initiative (SDI) is an applied research effort of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/\">Elections &amp;<br>Voting Information Center<\/a> (EVIC)\u00a0at Reed College to understand and advance the work of<br>America\u2019s local election officials (LEOs) and promote electoral integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>SDI is a multi-pronged collaborative research effort consisting of webinar conversations, a<br>cross-sector book publication, and a research convening of election science academic<br>researchers, local election official practitioners, and other election community stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Webinars\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EVIC held two SDI webinars in 2021 to begin these conversations.<\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first webinar,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/events\/stewards-of-democracy-initiative-webinar\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/events\/stewards-of-democracy-initiative-webinar\/\">\u201cStewards of Democracy Initiative: A Conversation\u201d<\/a>\u00a0introduced the following SDI topics through lively and practical discussion between academic researchers and local election officials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Diversity in Election Administration: Path to the Profession <\/li><li>The Voice of Local Election Officials in Election Reform<\/li><li>Nonprofit Funding &amp; Election Performance<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our second webinar, <a href=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/events\/recording-now-available-from-evic-second-sdi-webinar\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/evic.reed.edu\/events\/recording-now-available-from-evic-second-sdi-webinar\/\">\u201cStewards of Democracy Initiative: Adaptation, Adjustment, and Learning from the 2020 Election,\u201d<\/a> brought together election officials and election science researchers to discuss ways to adapt, adjust, and learn from the key challenges of 2020, while looking ahead to 2022. These topics were discussed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Challenges of Off-year Elections and Communicating State Election Legislation Changes to Voters<\/li><li>How to Minimize Turnover, Broaden Appeal, and Diversify the Workforce of Local Election Officials<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Research Topics<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our SDI research agenda is built around the belief that understanding the career paths,<br>work environment, and beliefs and values of individual local election officials is a critical<br>element to improve the resiliency of the elections system in the United States in times of<br>rapid change and heightened partisan polarization, and in the face of attacks on its integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are addressing the following applied research topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Proven methods to\u00a0broaden and diversify\u00a0the LEO community<\/li><li>Education and training that\u00a0foster voter-centric approaches\u00a0to election<br>administration<\/li><li>The impact of an increasingly polarized and competitive political environment in<br>recent years on\u00a0the professional ethos and work environment\u00a0of LEOs and<br>their staffs<\/li><li>The\u00a0culture of local election administration: beliefs, norms, opinions, and<br>values of local administrators<\/li><li>How\u00a0public and private partnerships help\u00a0to develop expertise and improve<br>electoral performance by LEOs<\/li><li>Local election administration in context: in the context of local government<br>and in the context of their service population<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edited Volume &amp; Book Conference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EVIC is organizing the compilation of an annotated volume about local election<br>administrators in the U.S which will be published in late 2022 \/ early 2023. The book will<br>include academic chapters accompanied by essays and articles written by researchers and<br>practitioners.
