It has now appeared in an English translation by<strong> Chi-Young Kim<\/strong> (Penguin, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some advice from the book, <strong>Chapter 2 &#8211; Mindfulness (When You Are Feeling Low)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>If you wish to clear away the clouds of your thoughts,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>simply keep your mind in the present.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The clouds of thought linger only in the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>past or the future.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Bring your mind to the present,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and your thoughts will rest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Rather than repeating,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;It is awful! It is awful!&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>stare straight into the awful feeling.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Quietly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Examine the feeling.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Can you see its impermanent nature?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Let the feeling leave when it says it wants to go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Keeping your mind in the present&#8221; and &#8220;staring straight into your feelings&#8221; are two descriptions of the same thing: giving your attention to your\u00a0<em>experience<\/em> (what you feel), rather than giving your attention to your\u00a0<em>commentary,\u00a0<\/em><em>wishes,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>analysis<\/em> (thoughts).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">An important part of mindfulness meditation practice is learning to distinguish experience from thought so that each can be recognized for what it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down&#8221; by Haemin Sunim has been a best-selling book in South Korea since it appeared in 2012 (41 weeks atop the best-sellers list, 3 million copies sold in 3 years).
