{"id":1588,"date":"2026-02-02T11:24:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T19:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/meditation\/?p=1588"},"modified":"2026-02-02T11:38:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T19:38:22","slug":"a-quiet-place-an-open-place-reposted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/meditation\/2026\/02\/02\/a-quiet-place-an-open-place-reposted\/","title":{"rendered":"A Quiet Place, An Open Place (reposted)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the 1960\u2032s, a Trappist monk named <a title=\"Thomas Merton Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.merton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Thomas Merton<\/strong><\/a> wrote,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_V._Steere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Douglas Steere<\/a> remarks very perceptively that there is a pervasive form of contemporary violence to which the idealist fighting for peace by nonviolent methods most easily succumbs: activism and overwork. The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He went on,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone and everything is to succumb to violence. More than that, it is cooperation in violence. The frenzy of the activist neutralizes his work for peace. It destroys his own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of his own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.<\/p>\n<p>from<em> \u2018Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander\u2019<\/em> by Thomas Merton*<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have spent most of my 60+ years\u00a0being \u2018carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns.\u2019 If the internet and email and work haven\u2019t been enough, there has also been my natural desire to be valued by my peers and my unshakeable belief that my \u2018value\u2019 is rooted in my accomplishments, real and imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Believing that, I get carried away.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Meditation provides an opportunity to step away from being \u2018carried away\u2019 and from the \u2018violence\u2019 that follows it. Through meditation we can experience our lives, experience the \u2018multitude of conflicting concerns\u2019 that our minds are always speaking, and reflect on life without acting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Quiet Place<\/strong> is the blog of a weekly silent meditation group that I started on the Reed College campus in Fall 2012. (first posted Aug 28, 2013*)<\/p>\n<p>*<em>This is an updated version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/meditation\/2013\/08\/28\/a-quiet-place-an-open-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very first post<\/a> that ever appeared on this blog. Two errors in the original have been corrected here: the title of Merton&#8217;s book is &#8220;Conjectures&#8230;&#8221; and not &#8220;Confessions&#8230;&#8221;, and the passage opens with an acknowledgement of Douglas Steere and his influence. And, I can&#8217;t help but add in 2026: I am now 70-going-on-71 and retired from teaching &amp; research, and yet &#8230; and yet &#8230; the &#8220;multitude of conflicting concerns&#8221; and so on that appear above are things that are still very much with us today.
