Most famous are the mosaics in the cathedral of Monreale with its wonderful cloister:<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/Monreale.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Monreale.jpg\"  height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/Monreale-thumb-240x320.jpg\"  width=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/MonCloister.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MonCloister.jpg\"  height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/MonCloister-thumb-240x320.jpg\"  width=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut equally impressive is the smaller chapel called the Capella Palatina,<\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/CapPal2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CapPal2.jpg\"  height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/CapPal2-thumb-240x320.jpg\"  width=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/CapPal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CapPal.jpg\"  height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/CapPal-thumb-320x240.jpg\"  width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhich is part of the larger Norman palace that the Norman kings took over from the Arab rulers:<\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/PalNorm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PalNorm.jpg\"  height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/PalNorm-thumb-240x320.jpg\"  width=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tNear by is La Zisa, built by the Norman kings purposely in a mixed Arab and Norman style:<\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/La%20Zisa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"La Zisa.jpg\"  height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/nigelnicholson\/files\/La%20Zisa-thumb-320x240.jpg\"  width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe wonderful Norman monuments are not all found in Palermo, however &#8212; if you get a chance, you should also visit Cefalu, the third of the great mosaic-laden Norman churches (and also the home a rather fine small museum, the Baron Mandralisca&#39;s museum, which includes an excellent coin collection and the vase of the tuna seller&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Palermo is a culturally very rich city, with a wonderful mix of styles, especially from the Norman period when the rulers sought to maintain and promote a diverse Greco-Latin-Arab culture.
