{"id":197,"date":"2012-08-20T14:30:38","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T21:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.reed.edu\/politika\/?p=197"},"modified":"2014-03-18T10:10:22","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T17:10:22","slug":"emotions-memory-and-voting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/politika\/2012\/08\/20\/emotions-memory-and-voting\/","title":{"rendered":"Emotions, Memory, and Voting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this fascinating new study, <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1540-5907.2012.00608.x\/abstract\">&#8220;Remembering and Voting: Theory and Evidence from Amnesic Patients&#8221;<\/a>, a team of scholars study memory, emotions, and voting behavior among a small group of amnesic patients.<\/p>\n<p>The scholars seek to find a critical test between different and competing information processing systems&#8211;conventionally understood as &#8220;emotional&#8221; and &#8220;cognitive&#8221; but actually quite a bit more complex than this simple dichotomy. \u00a0Interested readers can dive into the article to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>Settling on amnesic patients as a group to test competing models of rationality in voting is a fascinating choice. \u00a0Past research has used tried and true methods such as &#8220;distractor&#8221; tasks or surveys separated in time, but have never been quite able to &#8220;clear&#8221; memory. \u00a0Among amnesic patients, who lack the ability to retain short term information, there is no doubt that cognitive processing did not occur.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway from the piece is that respondents were able to select the &#8220;right&#8221; candidate, meaning the candidate who was closer to their previously expressed policy views, even when they were not able to &#8220;remember&#8221; candidate policy positions. \u00a0The authors speculate that &#8220;non declarative&#8221; learning occurs (candidates are sorted into categories such as &#8220;similar&#8221; or &#8220;not similar&#8221; to me, and this information is successfully stored as emotional attachments, even when cognitive retrieval is not possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this fascinating new study, &#8220;Remembering and Voting: Theory and Evidence from Amnesic Patients&#8221;, a team of scholars study memory, emotions, and voting behavior among a small group of amnesic patients.
