{"id":327,"date":"2012-09-18T13:53:13","date_gmt":"2012-09-18T20:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.reed.edu\/politika\/?p=327"},"modified":"2014-03-18T10:10:21","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T17:10:21","slug":"327","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/politika\/2012\/09\/18\/327\/","title":{"rendered":"Update from Millionaire&#8217;s Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moonbattery.com\/Thurston-Howell-III.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s difficult to know quite what to say about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XnB0NZzl5HA\">Mitt Romney&#8217;s statements<\/a> about the 47% of American society who don&#8217;t pay taxes and apparently utterly dependent on government and solidly in the Obama camp.<\/p>\n<p>The statement is inaccurate in so many ways&#8211;there are nearly 5000 hits from the search phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;gl=us&amp;tbm=nws&amp;q=romney+47%25+&amp;oq=romney+47%25+&amp;gs_l=news-cc.3..43j43i400.1367.5510.0.6175.14.8.1.5.5.0.60.280.8.8.0...0.0...1ac.1.mmILxf7eO-4\">&#8220;Romney 47%&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and most utterly pummel the candidate. \u00a0I love the most recent discovery that there are <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2012\/09\/18\/pf\/taxes\/romney-income-taxes-millionaires\/\">4000 millionaires in that 47%! \u00a0<!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(By the way, if the 47% think they are entitled to health care, food, and housing from the government [although I don&#8217;t recall that the federal government supplies any of these], I suppose the 53% think they are entitled to mortgages on their second homes,<\/p>\n<p>John Sides is rapidly <a href=\"http:\/\/themonkeycage.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/17\/mitt-romney-and-that-47\/\">re-posting his thoughts about &#8220;gaffes&#8221;<\/a> (I will also use scare quotes because I don&#8217;t think this counts as a gaffe). \u00a0I&#8217;ve disagreed with John on this point before, because I think he is narrowly defined whether or not a gaffe matters as when:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>actual voters are persuaded to change their minds because of the gaffes<\/em>.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t, then it\u2019s tough to argue that \u201cgaffes\u201d are really \u201cgame-changers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To be clear: John thinks they matter only if we can find a statistically discernible movement in support levels as measured by tracking polls.<\/p>\n<p>He notes one problem with this claim: the counterfactual if the gaffe had not happened. \u00a0I agree with him that counterfactuals are often based on tenuous assumptions. \u00a0At the same time, I would not so quickly discount the insights of reporters who are monitoring the campaign on a daily basis and may have insight into strategic decisions that are never reflected in tracking polls.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s another way that a &#8220;gaffe&#8221; can matter in ways that would not show up in polls&#8211;if the statement reinforces prior held sentiments and beliefs about a candidate. \u00a0These may help a candidate, they may hurt a candidate, or they may simply solidify their current standing. \u00a0And this can happen even if the facts of the statement are quickly forgotten. \u00a0It&#8217;s the emotional reaction that remains, something we&#8217;ve known as a discipline for a long time (and which I describe my my <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/politika\/2012\/09\/05\/why-the-marathon-story-has-legs-or-a-paean-to-walter-lippman\/\">&#8220;marathon post&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If the statement reinforces voters beliefs that Romney is out of touch and has lived life on an island (hat tip to David Brooks for the devastating description of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/18\/opinion\/brooks-thurston-howell-romney.html?hpw\">&#8220;Thurston Howell Romney&#8221;<\/a>), the reactions after the video could be very damaging.<\/p>\n<p>Not &#8220;devastating,&#8221; not a &#8220;game-changer,&#8221; but potentially hard to recover from at this late stage (that, btw, is what I think journalists mean), and potentially quite important to understanding the eventual outcome of the race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s difficult to know quite what to say about Mitt Romney&#8217;s statements about the 47% of American society who don&#8217;t pay taxes and apparently utterly dependent on government and solidly in the Obama camp.
