{"id":366,"date":"2012-10-02T10:18:02","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T17:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.reed.edu\/politika\/?p=366"},"modified":"2014-03-18T10:10:21","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T17:10:21","slug":"micro-economies-micro-micro-economies-and-the-political-challenges-in-metro-portland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/politika\/2012\/10\/02\/micro-economies-micro-micro-economies-and-the-political-challenges-in-metro-portland\/","title":{"rendered":"Micro Economies, Micro-Micro Economies, and the Political Challenges in Metro Portland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/88\/Washington_County_Oregon_Incorporated_and_Unincorporated_areas_Hillsboro_Highlighted.svg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"162\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Washington County, OR<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/jobs-and-economy\/2012\/10\/uneven-geography-economic-growth\/3067\/\">article by Richard Florida<\/a> will surely be used as further evidence of the wisdom of the Portland&#8217;s economic development trajectory for the past decade. \u00a0Florida, after all, was the guru of the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/features\/2001\/0205.florida.html\">young creative class&#8221; model.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the problem&#8211;just as a country as complex as the US consists of thousands of micro-economies, metropolitan areas themselves are far from uniform.<\/p>\n<p>In the Portland\/Vancouver metro area, for instance, the population and economic growth engines for the past decade have not been Multnomah County or the city core. \u00a0It&#8217;s been Hillsborough, Beaverton, and suburban Washington County.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2012\/09\/washington_county_oregons_econ.html\">Jeff Mapes recently reported<\/a> in the Oregonian:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thanks to its powerful economy, the county has been responsible for more than a fifth of the state&#8217;s population growth over the past 20 years, putting it on track to become the state&#8217;s most populous county by the mid-2030s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Poverty is 13% below the state average and the county now accounts for more than a quarter of all wages paid\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">statewide<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This creates some real challenges for our region. \u00a0As the<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/portlandcityhall\/2012\/09\/will_suburban_customers_be_cha.html\"> flap over fluoride<\/a> demonstrated once again, Portland doesn&#8217;t play particularly well with the suburbs, even though our economic future is essentially being driven by Washington and Clackamas counties.<\/p>\n<p>Hat tip to Clarice Cutler, Reed senior, for pointing out this article.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article by Richard Florida will surely be used as further evidence of the wisdom of the Portland&#8217;s economic development trajectory for the past decade. \u00a0Florida, after all, was the guru of the &#8220;young creative class&#8221; model.
