Why not on the groups that didn&#8217;t?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/learning.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/08\/the-demographics-of-the-2012-vote\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2012\/11\/08\/learning\/electiongraphicLN\/electiongraphicLN-blog480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Courtesy of the NY Times<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There have been a flurry of analyses in recent days about the surprising level of support Obama garnered from various groups in the population. \u00a0If we were to read the commentary, at least four different subgroups of the population were critical to the Obama victory.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latinodecisions.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/13\/obamas-re-election-sets-record-for-support-latino-voters\/\">Latino Decisions<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latinodecisions.com\/blog\/author\/latinodecisions\/\">Vicky DeFrancesco<\/a>\u00a0describes the &#8220;record support&#8221; for Obama among Latino voters. \u00a0Obama reached a high point not seen since Clinton&#8217;s reelection. Vicky doesn&#8217;t say that Latinos deserve credit for the win, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latinodecisions.com\/about\/our-team\/gary-m-segura\/\">Gary Segura<\/a>, another principal at Latino Decisions, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/arizonarepublic\/news\/articles\/2012\/11\/07\/20121107latino-votes-key-obamas-win.html\">not so shy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Counter Peter Levine, director of the well-respected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civicyouth.org\/\">CIRCLE<\/a>\u00a0program that studies youth civic engagement, who says that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/blogs\/washington-whispers\/2012\/11\/07\/preliminary-tallies-without-youth-vote-obama-would-have-lost-election\">without the youth vote, Obama would not have won the election.<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>But what about women? \u00a0Exit polls indicate that the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/07\/gender-gap-2012-election-obama_n_2086004.html\">gender gap in 2012 aided (the) Obama win.<\/a>&#8221; Romney&#8217;s loss in large part to GOP positions on reproductive rights and statements by candidates about rape.<\/li>\n<li>Poppycock! \u00a0Gary Gates of the UCLA school of law, quoted by Micah Cohen at <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/15\/gay-vote-seen-as-crucial-in-obamas-victory\/\">Five ThirtyEight<\/a>, tells us that the Obama&#8217;s three to one advantage among gay voters was &#8220;more than enough to give him the ultimate advantage.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.karthick.com\/\">Karthick Ramakrishnan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/polisci.berkeley.edu\/people\/faculty\/person_detail.php?person=256\">Taeku Lee<\/a>,\u00a0two well-known scholars of Asian Americna politics,\u00a0tell us &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/themonkeycage.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/29\/asian-americans-voted-democrat-we-should-not-be-surprised\/\">not to be surprised<\/a>&#8221; at the high level of support for Obama among Asian-Americans.
