{"id":467,"date":"2012-12-20T09:53:23","date_gmt":"2012-12-20T17:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.reed.edu\/politika\/?p=467"},"modified":"2014-03-18T10:10:20","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T17:10:20","slug":"how-the-fiscal-cliff-threatens-higher-ed-research-and-our-economic-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.reed.edu\/politika\/2012\/12\/20\/how-the-fiscal-cliff-threatens-higher-ed-research-and-our-economic-future\/","title":{"rendered":"How the fiscal cliff threatens higher ed research and our economic future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/files\/images\/blog_fiscal_cliff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/files\/images\/blog_fiscal_cliff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a>Two recent stories highlight how the fiscal cliff threatens the nation&#8217;s long run economic future.<\/p>\n<p>An article by Michael McRobbie, the president of Indiana University, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Multibillion-Dollar-Threat\/136363\/?cid=at&amp;utm_source=at&amp;utm_medium=en\">Chronicle of Higher Ed<\/a> focuses on the short and mid-term effects. \u00a0If sequestration takes place without any rational allocation of the cuts, $12.5 billion will be immediately cut from Federal research support. \u00a0The ten year reduction in Federal support could be over $300 billion, depending on how you calculate the impact.<\/p>\n<p>Lest this sound like another &#8220;special interest&#8221; protecting it&#8217;s piece of the pie, a <a href=\"http:\/\/itif.org\/\">research center not affiliated with higher education<\/a> (and <a href=\"http:\/\/itif.org\/content\/board\">Republican leaning<\/a>, if that matters) estimates that this would reduce\u00a0<strong>by half<\/strong> the basic level research conducted in the United States and cost us hundreds of thousands of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Then consider a recent article by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/19\/business\/say-goodbye-to-the-government-under-either-fiscal-plan.html?ref=politics&amp;_r=0\">Eduardo Porter in the NY Time<\/a>s notes that, even under Obama&#8217;s more generous spending proposal, total discretionary spending as a percentage of the Federal budget will fall to 1.7% of economic output, down from 3.1% last year. \u00a0Our basic research enterprise will surely suffer as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The future for American innovation and enterprise are not good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two recent stories highlight how the fiscal cliff threatens the nation&#8217;s long run economic future.
