The Calligraphy Initiative in Honor of Lloyd J. Reynolds<\/strong>, a program of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, is introducing a new generation of Reed students and community members to the study and practice of calligraphy and paleography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Calligraphy Initiative was founded in 2012 by Cooley Gallery Director Stephanie Snyder ’91, as an outgrowth of the Cooley Gallery exhibition, Lloyd Reynolds, A Life of Forms in Art<\/em> (2011), curated by Gay Walker ’69 (Special Collections Librarian, Reed College) and Stephanie Snyder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Calligraphy Initiative offers a series of weekly Scriptoria, free and open to all Reed College students, staff, faculty, and alumni. All materials are provided, no prior experience necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

6-8 P.M<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Thursday\u2019s class has typically taken an historical and paleographic approach, practicing different scripts based on historical manuscripts, and this year will be no different.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Friday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

2-4 P.M<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Friday\u2019s class will continue to focus exclusively on the practice of the Italic script, both formally (calligraphy) and informally (handwriting).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Zoom sessions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although Reed classes are once again meeting in person, we will continue to have a remote option for those alumni who do not live in Portland. Meeting via Zoom, we will maintain our regular Scriptorium schedule. Click a button below to enter the Zoom meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
