Summer research/employment opportunity in Portland

Looking for linguistics-related summer employment here in Portland? Richard Sproat, a researcher at the OHSU-affiliated Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU), is looking for two research assistants for an NSF-funded project on “Non-Linguistic Symbol Systems”.

Richard writes:

“I mentioned a while back that I might have a couple of slots for some
creative undergraduate linguistics students. The money has finally come
from NSF and I am now looking to fill a couple of slots on a project on
Non-Linguistic Symbol systems. I realize this may be getting late for
the summer, so I would also consider candidates for other times of the
year: this is a two-year project.

A synopsis of the project can be found here at the NSF page for the Award:

The ideal candidate will have a solid background in linguistics,
computational literacy (programming ability and knowledge of XML a
definite plus), and a willingness to learn new things.”

Pay is $500/week for a 10-week internship.

If you think you might be interested, contact Richard at <rws@xoba.com>. Be sure to mention that you’re from Reed College, and include the name of a faculty member who can give you a recommendation.
