The logistics of making your way downtown (figuring out the buses, navigating traffic, finding parking, etc.) can be a little daunting if you have a stacked to-do list. But, the reprieve of fall break is the perfect time to make a day trip out of venturing over to the west side of town. There’s the Portland Japanese Gardens, the Waterfront Park, Powell’s, and a whole new world of places to eat.<\/p>\n

The Sauvie Island pumpkin patch is hosting a corn maize now through November 1st. There are also pumpkins to pick, hayrides, “cow train rides”, a pyramid of hay to climb, and other classic fall activities at Sauvie Island. During October\u00a0there is also a Haunted MAiZE 7-10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Visit the MAiZE’s website for details.<\/a><\/p>\n

Green Dragon Bistro and Brew Pub is hosting an extensive pumpkin festival at their SE 9th Ave location. The event promises pumpkin beers, pumpkin food, and pumpkin games. “Pumpkin games” apparently include pumpkin bowling and pumpkin smashing; perfect for blowing off a little steam on the first day of break. The suggested $5 donations benefits Camp Ukandu, a medically supervised oncology summer camp for patients and siblings. RSVP on the official Facebook event.<\/a><\/p>\n

This year Portland is hosting the World Beard & Moustache Championships on Saturday, October 25th in Keller Auditorium. The competition begins at 1pm and the grand prize is awarded at 9pm. The 2015 World Championships will be held in Austria, so this is truly a not to be missed opportunity!
