Words, Movement, and Sounds at Centennial Reunions

For those who enjoy installations, alumni have created special spaces that participants can enjoy at their leisure during the week of Centennial Reunions, June 6-12; as these may be habit forming, repeat offenders are welcome…

GHOTI
Imagine an interactive installation where you engage with words and ideas and build an experience for fellow alumni along the way.  That is what GHOTI (pronounced “Fish”) is all about: entering the space and participating by contributing your thoughts under the various exhibit topics. Provocative oxymorons, alluring alliterations, a giant Reed-specific crossword puzzle, and sage advice are just some of the categories that lexophiles will encounter when entering this outdoor installation.  The more the merrier!  Or should we say Go GHOTI…

WANTED: Individuals who enjoy word play, especially crosswords, to help us prepare the space.  Contact Mike Teskey at teskeym@reed.edu. Interested folks will participate in a conference call and have manageable assignments to help make the space most memorable.

Movement and Sound: in this DanceMuse interactive installation, participants will move through a space and a sensor will make associated sounds.  A wiggle will elicit a sound, and so will a jump.  David Reeder ’92 is the creator of this fascinating experience and will be present for its premiere.

Calligraphy
The art of creating words and symbols by hand, and specifically the world of Prof. Lloyd Reynolds, is honored in an exhibit at the college’s Cooley Gallery.  Curator Stephanie Snyder ’91 has created a show especially for the college’s centennial that will interpret the spirit, craft, and impact that Reynolds had in the American calligraphy renaissance.

Reedies Dance! (by Amy Lindsay ’81)

DanceConcert2005_sm.jpg

Although I was a bio major, one of the most important parts of my Reed experience was dance; it kept me sane and gave me a creative outlet. So I approached other dancing alumni (Lisa Gillette ’79, Brynna Hurwitz ’81, Carla Mann ’81, Brian Graham-Jones ’81) and current and emeritus dance faculty about doing some dance events at Reunions and everyone jumped on board with great ideas. I even started a website where people can see the schedule of reunion dance events, volunteer to participate in a happening, and share stories and images of dance.

Dance will be everywhere at Centennial Reunions! There will be workshops and classes, open-improvisation sessions, showings of works in progress, an ice-cream social, an open house with current and emeritus faculty at Judy Massee’s house, and site-specific happenings choreographed for random locations across campus! Visit http://www.reediesdance.com to see the schedule, volunteer to participate in “a happening,” and to share your stories and images of dance. You can also get a peak at the proposed plans for Reed’s new performing arts building.

See you in June!

Free lodging at Reunions? You don’t say!

Do you have the Doyle Owl? We are offering a full scholarship to Centennial Reunions in exchange for his appearance during the week of June 6-12, 2011.  Oh yeah, and the rest of you get free dorm stays if you register online before March 1.* Check out this animated video of an alumna who thinks she has it in the bag…

*Recognizing that many alumni and their families have to travel a fair distance to get here, we are pleased to offer free lodging in the dorms (for any/all nights that week) to those who register online by March 1. Conspire with your friends via a special Centennial Reunions ecard and let them know of this great deal!

Boar lore

head_in_mouth.05.jpg

Have you heard the Reed myth about a group of people dressed in black druidic robes, marching in a hallowed procession that includes a cappella singing, torches, and a boar’s head on a pallet? Or perhaps you’ve witnessed it yourself on a frosty winter’s night? This curious scene isn’t just lore; it remains a beloved feature of the annual alumni holiday party. This yuletide celebration dates to the college’s early years, with the boar’s head procession appearing in the 1920s and becoming quite the beloved tradition.

Once in a century…

rennfayre_olde.jpgImagine an event that is curious combination of:

-Grandpa’s turning 100!
-It’s our parents’ golden anniversary
-A fun family reunion
-Burning Man
-Oregon Country Fair
-Renn Fayre (but ever so slightly more restrained)

A little Reunions ’11 levity

You’ve likely noticed by now that Centennial Reunions is going to be a very big deal. More than 1,500 Reedies are expected to converge back on campus to help celebrate Reed’s 100th birthday at Centennial Reunions, June 6-12, 2011. Though the lure of Reed is undeniable (Dr. Demento has said, “After 48 years Reed still pulls me like a magnet. I can already feel the field getting stronger!”), we know that returning to the mothership can be fraught with conflicting feelings… thus, we embark on a course of humor, of which I’m sure the good doctor would approve (warning, Mateo-brand levity ahead!).

DC chapter: offering housing for Reedies attending the Colbert/Stewart rally (guest column)

For those having in mind to come to the so-called “March of the Moderates” being organized by Jon Stewart in Washington, DC on October 30, aka the “Rally to Restore Sanity,” or to participate in Steven Colbert’s “March to Keep Fear Alive,” members of the alumni chapter in DC have offered to arrange housing for those coming from far enough away to want to stay in DC overnight. No promises on whether your housing will be on the fear or the sanity side.

We will also arrange for a place for Reedies to meet to walk to the rally site (perhaps with a Reed banner), and perhaps a post-rally dinner or pre-rally lunch. Attendees should come prepared to argue “fear” v. “sanity.” A suggested reading list?

For information, contact Paul Alan Levy ’73, plevy@citizen.org, 202/588-7725. DC area alumni willing to provide housing should contact Paul with your number of beds (or amount of floor space) and location.
