It just<br \/>\nlies there.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>There&#8217;s a good physics<br \/>\nreason for that.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And when you go<br \/>\nswimming, the water still doesn&#8217;t do anything exciting.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It keeps you afloat, and you kind of<br \/>\nstir it around and scatter waves about in all directions.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But those waves are just small<br \/>\nfry.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>They&#8217;re just minnows.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In June, at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reed.edu\/alumni\/reunions\/\">Centennial Reunions<\/a>, we&#8217;re going to rouse a<br \/>\nleviathan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The &#8220;Mother of All Waves&#8221; has lain dormant in the Reed pool<br \/>\nfor all these years.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We&#8217;re going<br \/>\nto enter her lair and wake her up.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>To see her in action, that is our quest.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Guided by Rubber Duckie and armed with the Pendulum of<br \/>\nDestiny, we will go in &#8230; and out &#8230; and in &#8230; and out &#8230; and in &#8230;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>and the wave will grow until the<br \/>\nspectators are shouting &#8220;Hey wait a minute!<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s getting too big!<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>It&#8217;s beginning to slosh onto the floor!<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Make them stop! <span>&nbsp;<\/span>Make them stop!&#8221;<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And we will stop.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>We will stop to paddle to the middle of the pool, there to be carried<br \/>\nback &#8230; and forth &#8230; and back &#8230; and forth &#8230; propelled and exhilarated by the<br \/>\npower of a wave of our own making.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>But as we bask there, going back &#8230; and forth &#8230; and back &#8230; and forth &#8230; we<br \/>\nare left pondering that age-old question:<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Between the human race on the one hand, and the laws of physics on the<br \/>\nother, who is the master?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Who is<br \/>\nthe master?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here&#8217;s a chance for alumni to consider this question and get<br \/>\na different kind of workout, either Thursday at 10:30 a.m. or Friday at 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So be sure to remember your swimsuit when you pack.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And if you plan to join us, please send<br \/>\na note to the course instructor, Brad Wright &#8217;61, at <a href=\"mailto:bandrwright@yahoo.com\">bandrwright@yahoo.com<\/a> so he&#8217;ll know<br \/>\nwhom to expect.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Most people, when they go swimming, think it&#8217;s all about them.&nbsp; But it&#8217;s actually all about the water.&nbsp; Take the Reed pool for example.&nbsp; What&#8217;s going on with the water there?&nbsp; Nothing much.
