Today’s the big day! Though less flashy than presidential election years, midterm elections are equally high stakes and determine congressional representation for a given district, the status of local initiatives, and more. Oregonlive has a voter guide which breaks down the candidates and initiatives to be voted on in today’s midterm elections.

A list of official and unofficial ballot drop off sites can be found here. Ballots must be received by 8pm tonight to be counted!
The closest ballot drop off to Reed is at the Woodstock Library, located just a mile east of campus.

Tonight: Ralph Lemon, lecture and demonstration at 7:30pm in the Massee Performance Lab. Ralph Lemon is a choreographer/visual artist/conceptualist whose work spans three decades (to envision what a conceptualist might be check out some of Lemon’s work.) Later this upcoming month: an evening with Junot Diaz, Monday, November 17th at 6:00pm (doors open at 5:30pm) in Kaul Auditorium. Junot Diaz is a Dominican-American writer, recipient of both the Pulitizer Prize and a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, and the author of this year’s community reading project, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. This event is open to the public, and seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, check out the event page.
Commons is open 11:30am-5pm Monday through Friday, with dinner service this upcoming Sunday. Normal hours resume Monday (10/27).
The Paradox is open 10am-4pm throughout fall break in the olde shop (aka the SU location) only. Normal hours resume for both the Paradox and Paradox Lost on Monday.
The library is open 8am-8pm Monday through Friday, and 10am-8pm this Saturday. Normal hours resume Sunday.
The sports center is open 7am-7pm Monday through Friday and is closed over both weekends. Normal hours resume Monday.
The health center has drop in hours 10am-2pm Monday through Friday and is closed over both weekends. Normal hours resume Monday.
If you’re staying in Portland over fall break and you’re not planning on setting up camp in the Hauser Fundome like some thesising seniors (certainly not this thesising senior) you may want to try to “make the most” of our weeklong vacation from classes. Whatever that means.

Last Friday, after Language House residents wiped the sweat off their brows from Activities Fair, we all wandered into the International Plaza for an International Dessert Night. The Russian, German, French, Spanish, and Chinese Houses, along with the Arabic Theme Dorm, baked and brought desserts from their accompanying cultures. As residents ate and mingled, an international playlist, carefully curated by the language scholars and house advisors, played in the background. Listen to it here!

Last week was an excellent one for the many cooks in the summer housing kitchens. On Tuesday, Cristobal and I made some delicious (and experimental) dishes. And on Wednesday… well, I’ll let you see for yourselves!
First up, Alyssa made a staple, her own baked vegetable dish that she cooks fairly frequently. When you work all day in an organic chemistry lab, proper nutrition is vital, and this dish does the job. Just look at all that color!
Wow!
Connor made a fancy salad with lettuce, tomato, bacon, and avocado. He also whipped up homemade salad dressing out of just Greek yogurt, bleu cheese, and water!
Since we all cook for ourselves just about every day, you can bet there will be even more gorgeous pictures of what we’ve made. Maybe we’ll start our own reality show!
