Handbook Introduction

Hoot Hoot!

If you are reading this on the SHARE Blog, chances are that you are a Night Owl, or a Reedie looking to learn more about what Night Owls do. This handbook is a collection of resources, information, and other insights into how Night Owls can effectively carry out our job on campus. It was created in the summer of 2024, and aims to be a living and growing document to reference for all present and future Night Owls. It contains all the information we should have received during training, and mayhaps more! We use this as a reference when on the job, for information when someone asks you a question, or just to check in on the scope of our responsibilities.

This handbook also contains some information about the history and ethos of the Night Owls, including our core values and what we hope to achieve in the community around us. We at SHARE have the power not only to stop the cycle of harm in our community, but to lead that community towards something new; a culture of consent, where we all support and uplift each other. Know that you are part of a long line of students who care for, and want to give back to, the Reed community. This handbook is also a symbol of our support for you in this endeavor.

To Night Owls: remember that you are a vital part of the campus safety net. There rests a lot of responsibility on your shoulders– but you are not alone. This handbook, your coworkers, your Captains, and L. are all amazing resources you can use whenever you feel confused or worried about your role on campus. You as a Night Owl are also beloved by the Reed Community, and there exists a lot of trust in your role. With great power comes great responsibility–or something.

It’s a lot to process, but you got this!
