Random House presents the Great Gatsby Shindig

“And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.” – Jordan, The Great Gatsby

Winch/Capeheart was alive with jazz, laughter and dance on Saturday  as flappers and their dapper dates flooded the starlit space. This past weekend Random House, Reed’s Literature Dorm, put on The Great Gatsby Shindig for the entire campus and over 100 people came to revel in the roaring 20s. As T.J. Eckleburg supervised, Reedies ate, schmoozed and chatted in the lovely space (enabled by the astounding teamwork of Random Housers who elected to decorate).

As the ever-talented Reed Jazz Ensemble played an excellent full set, students danced, made masks, and conversed in dim corners. Some enjoyed the refreshments provided as well. Random House was so excited to put on this event, and we think it showed – we can’t wait to do it again next year!

“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.” ? F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Murder Mystery Night in the Grove!

The week of Halloween, residents of the Grove got together for a Murder Mystery Night! The Grove was transformed into Shady Oaks, a small town where a new family family had just moved in and had invited everyone to a house warming party. Party attendees were asked to dress the part and play the roles assigned to them as they arrived.

Each round we were given clues about our characters and other guests at the party. Our goal was to figure out their history before the end of the night. It was like speed dating as we took turns meeting one another and asking probing questions.

Then, a murder occurred!

And everyone, including our host, Isabella Dawson (Danielle Juncal), was alarmed to discover there was a murderer among us.

After we victimized one another and spread rumors about the suspected killer, we decided that the best way to solve the mystery was through individual confessions. One by one, party attendees gave their alibis…

Some were more convincing than others.

In the end, we were all tricked by the real murderer––a foreign chocolate-maker disguised as a town resident. Even though we weren’t able to solve the crime, by the end of the night, we could all agree that the investigative process and each other’s company made it a party to die for!

Naito/Sullivan Autumnfest!

About 50 residents from Naito and Sullivan gathered on a rainy Saturday in October to celebrate all things autumnal! We drank cider! We carved pumpkins! We painted faces! And we ate entirely too many caramel apples and cheap candy. Good thing we had a foos-ball table to work it all off. Check out the festivities:
