Meet Your New Bloggers: Sasha

Hi Reed,

My name is Sasha. I started working at ResLife this week and am excited to work with this crew of eclectic people. I’m a junior History-Russian Lit major who just returned from six months in St. Petersburg. Last year I lived in the Russian House, and it was one of the best living situations I could ask for. For anyone learning a language at Reed, I highly recommend living in the Language Houses. Living there prepared me for my time in Russia in unexpected ways, like when I learned how to pickle (very important in Russia), or when I learned all the Russian names of countries by playing Russian Risk.

In Russia with my host cat, Simon.

In my free time, I like to watch “Broad City,” bike around, and learn to read tarot cards. My favorite things are: pizza, music that sounds like it would be playing at a high school prom that was DJed by David Lynch, Daniil Kharms, and coffee.

The ladies of “Broad City,” hands down the best comedy on TV right now.

In my (almost) three years at Reed, I’ve edited The Quest for three semesters, worked in the mailroom, DJed at KRRC, and learned how to make a radio story from an NPR correspondent. As a kid I lived in the Midwest and California, but Portland (and Reed) is now my home.

If you have questions about Language Houses, going abroad, or anything housing-related, please ask!

-Sasha

Meet Your New Bloggers: Ruth

Hello there!

My name is Ruth, and I am a freshman student living on-campus. As the newest addition to the Residence Life team, I am just learning the ropes around here, but I hope to be able to help you in any way possible. I would especially like to extend my hand to freshmen and incoming students who are just learning how Reed works. Having recently gone through the process myself, I understand which things can be confusing…

Taken at a photobooth in Portland last month to celebrate how amazing 2014 is going to be.

My prospective major at Reed is Religion with a focus on Abrahamic religions. I am intensely interested in religious texts and what kind of impact they have on people from the individual, psychological level to the wider sociological level.

In my free time, I jump at any chance to do arts & crafts and all things DIY. I like to paint watercolor & ink illustrations, hand-make cards to brighten up people’s days, take photographs, cross-stitch, sew, cook, bake, garden, build, and just about anything that lets me get my hands dirty.

Getting glitter & glue all over myself as usual.

I am also a passionate native Oregonian with pine sap in my blood and salty ocean air in my lungs. Oregon has every kind of geography you need to explore the beautiful outdoors: a breathtaking coastline, an impressive volcanic mountain range, a lush, lovely valley, and a high desert! Whether you want to hike, climb, ski, surf, sail, canoe, or cycle, you can do it without going far. If you have any questions about fun trips to take around our amazing Pacific Northwest, I would love to help!

It has been lovely to meet you. Have a beautiful spring!

Meet Your New Bloggers: Carly

Hello there, this is Carly Goldblatt, your newest blogger for Res Life. I’ve been working in the office since Fall 2012, my freshman year. I’m a little late to the game, but better late than never. I am studying Psychology with a Cognitive Science focus and I will graduate in spring, 2016.

I am from Los Angeles so movies have always been a huge part of my life and continue to be one of my greatest loves. I am a passionate scuba diver and I go whenever I can. I also enjoy snowboarding, especially on Mt. Hood with the Reed PE class. I am allergic to cats and dogs, but when I moved out to go to college, my dad decided it was a good time to get one. I love her dearly even though she makes me sneeze, her name is Nara (after Jedi knight, Luminara Unduli from Star Wars).

I live off campus in a house in Sellwood, which I love very much. If you ever have questions about off-campus living or are debating trying it, don’t hesitate to approach me and ask about it. I’d be happy to discuss it!

Shanghaiers, Saloons & Skullduggery: A Walking Tour of Portland’s Sinful Past

A 21+ event with a bit of an academic twist: Doug Kenck-Crispin, historian for orhistory.com, will be hosting a walking tour of the Portland of yesteryear this Saturday. Before Portland was branded as “quirky” by the Independent Film Channel, it had a reputation as a center for danger and debauchery. The tour will highlight the notable sordid locales of the time in the area now known as Old Town, which some of you may know as the home of this iconic sign:

If you’re under twenty-one, out of town, or otherwise occupied this Valentine’s Day weekend, no worries! Orhistory.com is a great resource for all things PCNW history, and their (NSFW) podcast “Kick Ass Oregon History”.

S’mores!

This Monday our dorms Ladd and Abington took some time out of our studying to break in our gorgeous common room fireplace and make some good old fashioned s’mores! It was great to catch up with people after their first week of classes, and just relax with a childhood past time. We feel so lucky to live in ODB and be able to have live cozy fires whenever we want!

Stay Calm! It’s Only Snowing

It’s flurrying in Portland today, which means that all the Southern California transplants and Portland natives are in a state of awe and/or panic. If you’re from the Northeast or the Midwest then you already know the drill, but since Reed has students from all over the US and the globe, it can’t hurt to share a few snow survival tips.

Looking Back to a Warm September

As Spring semester beckons, we in Sequoia look back to the warm and wonderful days of September. Our House went to the Oregon Coast for some sun and ice cream right at the start of the year.

Bidwell Movie Night and Classy Party!

Residents gathered round the projector and the fireplace for a night of classic movies and good times.  First we socialized, ate fancy cheeses, enjoyed tea and digestives, and had a fantastic night in.

Movie Night

We watched The General (1926), a silent film and Buster Keaton Classic.

The General

And of course Reedies took pictures together in their best dress and were classy as always.
