Important Dates for Spring Semester

Paideia drew to a close less than 48 hours ago with a group massage session in the SU, and now second semester classes are well underway (I can’t be the only one already neck deep in reading assignments). That being said, here are a few dates to keep in mind as we look ahead to Renn Fayre.

  • February 20th: registration opens for the 2014-2015 housing lottery; theme and language house applications will be made available through the housing portal.
  • February 26th: deadline to apply for theme and language housing.
  • March 24th: deadline to submit a housing deposit and register for the general lottery.
  • March 26th-28th: theme and language house lottery; senior lottery.
  • April 1st-9th: general lottery.
  • May 1st: deadline to cancel housing contracts; summer housing students will be informed of their application status by email.
  • May 20th: residence halls close at noon for the spring semester.

(Dates updated as of Tuesday, January 28th at 1:43 pm.) Some of the above dates, particularly those pertaining to the housing lottery, are still subject to change. Please visit the housing lottery section of our website for the most current timeline.

If you have any further questions about these dates, the upcoming housing lottery, summer housing, or anything residence life related, feel free to contact us at res-life@reed.edu.

Stress Relief Kits in Sullivan III

As we enter the end of the semester, I wanted to make sure that Sullivan III Southside was prepared to emerge triumphantly from finals week!  So, I decided to give them a few supplies in a handy goody bag to help them through all the work.  Inside the bags were:

-A stress ball

-A highlighter for expert level studying

-Some peppermint candies (peppermint is said to help memory!)

-Chocolate–because chocolate always makes things better

-Sleepytime tea, and

-Some handouts on time management and effective reading

Wishing everyone the best of luck this finals week!  Don’t forget to get some slee.

Live Music in Chittick’s Music Appreciation Society

Screen shot 2013-12-09 at 1.41.46 PM

Last Friday the Music Appreciation Society (MAS) showed their musical talents with a common room show in Chittick. Five different bands played on the impromptu stage, in what proved to be a night of awesome music and rocking times!

The crowd of fifty odd people danced the night away, as the band members (most of which were Chittick residents and MAS members) grooved and jammed away. At the end, everyone left the show exhausted, but filled with the joy of a good show.

Reed Co-op’s debut: Thanksgiving Hootenanny!

On November 23rd, the Reed College Co-ops collectively made their campus debut with a party and feast!

1459705_390787851054884_1994119280_nThe two houses (Garden and Farm) worked together to show off our culinary talents with a huge Thanksgiving meal (along with our dedicated satellites) that included turkey, pumpkin soup, vegan “turkey”, salad, beet and goat cheese pies, roasted root veggies, baked brussel sprouts, vegan stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffed apples, corn bread, cranberry sauce, and more! and served the meal to about 130 folks.1426296_390786714388331_1549042771_n

The Ladies Pie Society brought twelve (count em’) pumpkin pies, and the Student Union turned cozy with lights, fabric, and a homemade scarecrow. We invited an old-time band and caller to perform and call some square dances, and were joined by alumni Jim Kahan who also led several dances.

Several students performed alongside the band on fiddle and washboard. Many rounds of square dancing were enjoyed by all, the dedicated dancers stuck around ’til the very last free waltz at 10:00 pm. All in all, a roarin’ success for the Co-ops, who are hoping to bring more home-cooked food and good times to Reed College campus.

A Poetic Evening Chez President Kroger

Screen shot 2013-12-02 at 12.58.35 PM

On November 21, President Kroger graciously received 13 kindred book-loving souls (the residents of Random House, Reed’s literature theme dorm) for dinner at his home in Eastmoreland. Tacos and pie were on the menu, which the group enjoyed in the living room, seated in a half-circle around the fire.

Tea with Rose in Sullivan 3

Sullivan 3 Northside had the pleasure of getting to know their custodian, Rose. We shared introductions and stories over hot tea. Rose is from Vietnam and was sweet enough to teach us how to make Vietnamese spring rolls. IMG_6190

We soaked crunchy rice paper in water until it became elastic. Afterwards, we used the rice paper to wrap fillings such as shrimp, pork, glass noodles, and lettuce. We faced a challenge of wrapping as the filling kept falling out. But with Rose’s encouragement and guidance, they kept trying and finally mastered the art of spring roll wrapping.

Rainy Day Activities: The Kennedy School

While perusing the internet for all things Portland, as one is wont to do, I recently came across an adorable little blog called Rainy Day Portland: Things to Do With Your Parents and Guests When It Rains. It’s a problem we all inevitably run into, your guests have arrived and the weather is Not Having It. But your parents didn’t come all the way out here to watch Netflix and wait for you to finish up in the library, so you need to devise a plan b. Plan Bs are exactly what Rainy Day Portland provides.

Before stumbling across Rainy Day Portland I was unfamiliar with the Kennedy School (which goes to show that as small as Portland may seem, three years is not nearly long enough to explore the city), but now it’s first on my go-to list the next time I have family in town.
