10 Summer Things to do Before Move-In

Although summertime has just begun and students have plenty of time to relax, eager nü Reedies count the days until they can move into their new homes. Because new student move-in day is in 10 weeks, here is a list of 10 things to finish or accomplish before trekking to Portland in August. Okay, some of them are kind of a stretch, but they’re all activities or to-dos work thinking about.

Fun Fact: When making a list, I always include "Write a list" just so that I can cross it off.

Fun Fact: When making a list, I always include “Write a list” just so that I can cross it off.

  1. PLEASE DO YOUR SUMMER READING. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Nothing is sadder than a freshly-arrived freshman spending Orientation week in the residence halls, scanning frantically through complex texts instead of A) carefully reading them during the summer and B) enjoying the fun festivities of O-Week. Wait… there is something sadder: being the ill-prepared student in the Hum 110 conference who blabs something incorrect about the summer reading and receives skeptical blank stares from classmates. Ouch.  Continue reading

Portland Music Scene

So you’re sitting at home, Spotify open, trying to make an awesome PDX playlist to dance around to (or depending on what you’re into, brood in your basement to) until Orientation. Problem is, you have no idea which artists call Portland home. You know that Seattle boasts grunge rock legends like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains and everyone’s favorite thrift store shopper, Macklemore. You’ve long since associated Los Angeles and the Bay Area with everyone from Tupac to Lil B to MC Hammer to Devendra Banhart to The Mars Volta to N.W.A to Skrillex to AFI to Third Eye Blind to Trapt to Onigo Boingo to Fiona Apple to Lana Del Ray to…you get the idea. But here you are, staring at your computer screen, drawing a blank. Never fear! We’ve done all the hard work for you.

Incoming Freshman Housing Information

Hi, incoming Reedies!

We want to thank all of you who have been filling out your housing forms over the last few weeks and to apologize for the frustration that the roommate search process may be causing. We are using a new housing management system this year and have unfortunately been dealing with some technical difficulties. We are working on getting them fixed, but we cannot guarantee that the roommate search function will be working properly before this Saturday, June 15, when housing forms are due. If you have a specific roommate in mind you can certainly email us (res.life@reed.edu) the name of the person you would like to live with and we will do our best to honor your request. Please keep in mind that roommate requests need to be mutual, so we will need to receive an email from both students. If you do not have a specific roommate in mind, don’t worry. We will match you up with someone based on your answers to your profile questions. Thanks so much for your patience while we work out the kinks of this new system. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and we’ll be in touch with your room assignment in early August. We look forward to welcoming you on campus!

Best,

Did You Know? Weird and Quirky Facts About Portland #12

Now, I’m not a science major, and the mere sight of a piece polysyllabic scientific jargon makes me confused and disoriented. However, this piece of Oregonian geological history really piques my interest and even boggles my literature-loving mind.

Portland sits atop a Plio-Pleistocene geological feature called the Boring Lava Field, named after the nearby city Boring, OR (which could be the punchline of this post, but we’ll continue). While Reed doesn’t sit directly on a dormant volcano, the Boring Lava Field consists of 32 dormant and extinct cinder cones just southeast of Portland. I suppose the boring part is that these cinder cones and shield volcanoes have been dormant for about 300,000 years. Yawn. Meanwhile, the visible vents are called “buttes,” which I know is pronounced “bju-t” but come on. Portland is surrounded by Boring Buttes, and I can’t help but find that to be hilarious.

Looking Back at Olde Reed

Many current Reedies and Reed alum grumble that “Olde Reed is dead.” That is to say, they believe that the old culture and traditions of Reed have long since passed. Regardless of the presumed death of “Olde Reed” or the entrance of a Nü Reed generation, looking back at pictures of Reed during the previous decades provides perspective and reflection on the current College experience.

5 Reed Dorm Essentials (That You Might Not Think Of)

Yes, you should bring a raincoat, a pack of ramen, and a pair of clean socks, but you already know that. Here are a few key items that help make the transition to Reed a little easier:

  1. Electric water heater: Tea and coffee are the lifeblood of Reed College, and a personal water heater allows you to fuel and heat yourself up on a rainy day. Not a caffeine fan? You still should bring a water heater because nothing beats a cup of hot cocoa!
  2. Blue tape: Wall putty and duct tape rip the paint off of the walls, which is a major no-no. Blue tape is generally strong enough to hold up posters without taking a toll on surfaces.
  3. Power strip: Usually each residence hall room is equipped with a couple of outlets, but sometimes that isn’t enough for your desk lamp, phone charger, computer charger, standing lamp, blowdryer, water heater, mini fridge, etc.
  4. Reusable grocery bags: You don’t need to bring your own from home, but you should invest in some reusable bags. The local grocery store doesn’t have handles on their paper bags, and it’s easier to walk home with groceries situated in solid bags.
  5. Antibacterial wipes: Residence Halls tend towards a messy chaos, regardless of the students living there. Keep it clean with some antibacterial wipes! These also help fight germs during flu seasons or when your roommate is sick.
