A new app is ready to handle your “bookshelf” any time you check out a full ebook from ProQuest’s Ebook Central platform: Ebook Central Reader App. If you have ever used Adobe Digital Editions to read ProQuest ebooks in the past, this app replaces it.
Ebooks from platforms like Cambridge Core, De Gruyter Brill, Elsevier ScienceDirect, Oxford Academic, and SpringerNature Link are unaffected.
You will also still be able to read ProQuest ebooks in your browser or download chapters as PDFs without using this app. This app is only for reading ProQuest ebooks that you have checked out.
You will recognize this app is necessary when the phrase “free third-party software” appears in the Availability section of the ebook details on Ebook Central.

App Installation
Once you encounter a ProQuest ebook that you want to check out, the basic outline of steps are as follows:
- Select Download Book and confirm the checkout length
- Follow the download button to download the version of the app that matches your device
- Go back to your browser to see the registration code and then enter it into the app and submit
- Once the app syncs, you will see the ebook on your “bookshelf”
You are all set up and ready to read!
Most people will probably set this app up on a laptop first, but if you would also like to use the app on your phone or a tablet, you can add it as a another device:
- Download and install Ebook Central Reader App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
- Open the app, where you’ll see a welcome message
- Go back to Ebook Central on your browser, select Profile, then look down the page for the line EBC APP DEVICES and select the link for Manage
- On the Manage Your Devices page, select the button that says Get Login Code
- Enter the registration code into the app on your phone and submit

Once you have the app installed, your app bookshelf will sync between devices. This first version of the app supports bookmarking; highlighting and note taking are in development for future releases.
Any device you have registered will appear in your ProQuest account on the Manage Your Devices page in your Profile. You can remove a device whenever you want.
If you have any trouble setting up this app, please get in touch!
