Trials in Music Data and Music History

For anyone interested in the confluence of music, history, and data, we have two trials that may spark new connections and reveal avenues of inquiry:

RIPM Jazz Periodicals

Closes: December 7

Produced by the Répertoire International de la Presse Musicale (RIPM), RIPM Jazz Periodicals provides users with a contemporary view of jazz history by digitizing and preserving a body of often fragmentary and ephemeral jazz journals. Content includes articles, reviews, illustrations, and advertisements from jazz publications spanning the early 20th century to the early 21st century. A list of periodicals is available online.

MusicID

Closes: November 26

Calling itself the premier source of global music industry data, MusicID aggregates international charts, streaming, and sales data. In addition to browsing and searching the source data, their platform supports the creation of custom datasets and visualizations, and these are downloadable as Excel files. For a full overview, take a look at their brochure or, if you have more time, check out this recently recorded demo.

Our fundamental question when trying out one of these resources is: how will this support the learning, teaching, and research happening in the Reed community?

Whether you’re a student, faculty member, or staff member, we welcome your answer to this question! To share your thoughts, please complete our trial feedback form.

If you have questions about this trial, email library-er@reed.edu.
