Portland Saturday Market is the longest continuously running outdoor market in the country.
It’s time to start carving pumpkins for Halloween! Here are some cute, easy, ideas for your pumpkin this year:
1) Cat: Clearly the best idea.
2) Night Sky: These easy shapes can be as simple or detailed as you want!
3) Cyclops: It’s easy and scary and nerdy all at the same time!
4) Owl: Because you are a Reedie after all.
What: Escape Nightclub’s Annual Halloween Bash!
Who: All ages, $12 until midnight, $15 after, LGBTQ and allies
Where: The Escape, 333 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97205
When: 10/27 11pm (show starts around 2)
Why: Dress up and head out to Portland’s only all-ages nightclub! The Escape is a Portland favorite, especially for LGBTQ youth, and their Halloween bash promises to be a great night of dancing, music, costume contests, and spooky silliness. The event is also late enough that you can go after Harvest Ball.
How: You can take the 19 right there, but you’ll need bikes/cars/cabs to get back since the event will go late.
Portland hosts the longest running teenage queer pageant in the world. The Rosebud and Thorn has been going for 33 years and is hosted by the Escape, an all-ages queer nightclub in downtown Portland.
What: Design Week Portland
Who: All of y’all! Most of the events are free, but some require registration online to RSVP. The prices to view the films in the evenings range from about $7-$10.
Where: Venues around Portland, including Museum of Contemporary Craft, PSU, Hovercraft Studio, and the Ziba Auditorium.
When: 10/9 – 10/13
Why: During the week there will be a ton of cool events that anyone can attend. People from all over the country (though a heavy focus on PDX, of course) will be discussing everything from urban design and graffiti to furniture and shoes in a series of free exhibits, lectures, and films. Plus, it coincides with the first weekend of Fall Break, so it’s a fun event to take advantage of if you’re staying in the Portland Area.
How: Take your bike, bus, or car to any of the varied locations. The venues are pretty scattered, but they are all listed on the Design Week website.

Now it’s finally actually October so pumpkins are totally reasonable to talk about, right? Right.
Here’s a cute idea for a little floor get-together or dinner with your housemate: pumpkin bowls!
Get as many small pie pumpkins as you will need for bowls and wash and dry them. Preheat the oven to 350. Cut the tops off the pumpkins and hollow them out. Place the bowls and “lids” on a baking dish and cover them with foil. Roast them in the over for 40-50 minutes or until soft. Fill them with soup and enjoy!
Soup ideas by order of laziness:
Lazy: Get soup from commons. Pour into pumpkin.
Kind of lazy: Walk to Trader Joe’s and get their pumpkin soup. Make it. Pour into pumpkin.
Not very lazy: Finely chop an onion and sautee it in about 1tbsp butter, margerine, or oil. Mix in a 16oz can of pumpkin puree, 1 1/3 cup of vegetable broth, 3 cups of milk (soy milk), a dash of nutmeg, and a dash of sugar. Pour into pumpkin.
All the energy/motivation: Start by growing your own pumpkins. Then follow Martha Stewart. Pour into pumpkin.
I basically started writing these posts so I could tell you all to go to Greek Fest.
What: 61st Annual Portland Greek Festival
Who: Everybody! Tokens are available when you arrive but there is no admission fee
Where: Holy Trinity Greek Orthadox Cathedral, 3131 NE Glisan
When: 10/5-10/6 11-8pm and 10/7 12-7pm
Why: This is such a great event I can’t really even explain why it’s a great event. You basically just go and eat Greek food and complain about all the people. Maybe if you are really motivated you look at the schedule and watch some dancing. Regardless, there are what I generally view as honey-coated fried donut balls and that should be enough for you.
How: Take the 19 toward downtown and then just don’t get off until you cross the river twice and then see what is clearly the Greek Fest.
