  • MUST READ: O-Chem Week #1

Hi, This is Alan Shusterman, your Chem 201 instructor.

Classes get underway tomorrow and the first o-chem lecture will be in Eliot 314, but o-chem will actually start earlier in the day for some of you. Confusing? Let me tell you exactly what you need to know.

Lecture this week. There are two lecture sections for Chem 201 this year: MW 3:10-4:30 & TuTh 10:30-11:50. Both meet in E314. The caps have been lifted a bit in order to make room for 82 students (45 in MW F01 and 37 in TuTh F02). Please attend only the section that you have registered for. If you are still trying to add this class, you must come see me and persuade me to sign an ADD form because online registration is closed.

CLICKERS this week. I plan to use clickers starting on Day 1. Bring your clicker to every lecture. If your clicker needs to a little tender care or a juicier battery, take it to the Bookstore on Monday morning. If you can't find your clicker, you can buy one at the Bookstore.

    >>> LAB THIS WEEK <<< Labs will meet every day this week, starting tomorrow. We have four lab sections for Chem 201 this year: MTuF 1:10-5:00 and Th 12:30-4:20. Lab lecture takes place in Psych 105 for all students on F, 9-9:50. Please attend only the section that the Registrar has placed you in. (Note: the Registrar reassigned several students to new lab sections last Friday nite so your schedule may have changed.) If you were on a waiting list or if you would like to change lab sections, you will need to come see me and persuade me to sign an ADD form. If you absolutely cannot make it to your assigned lab section, then please come to the section that you would like to be in. Here's our tentative lab schedule for this week:

  • Preregistration for Fall 2012

Chem 201 will experiment with a new schedule in Fall 2012 (but Chem 202 will stick with the traditional schedule). So for 201 only:

    • Two lecture sections to choose from: MW 3:10-4:20 OR TuTh 10:30-11:50. They will cover identical material. The only difference is when they meet. Students are asked to attend only the section that they have signed up for, but this rule will be relaxed in case of student illness. So preregister for one section.
    • No conferences (but Chem 202 will have Thursday conferences)
    • Lab days are MTF, 1:10-5:00 (no W lab in the fall). Students are asked to attend only the section that they have signed up for. It is not unusual for students to swap lab sections during the first week of the semester (and if enrollments are sufficiently high, we will add a fourth lab section, but we aren't there yet). Preregister for one lab section.
    • Lab lecture has moved to F 9:00-9:50. Attendance at lab lecture is not required and I will permit students to sign up for other 9 AM classes that might conflict with the lab lecture. That said, you are still responsible for all of the material presented in lab lecture and I strongly discourage students who have a conflict from taking the F afternoon lab.

The prerequisites for Chem 201 are Chem 101/102, lecture + lab, or their equivalent. Students who have not completed the prerequisites cannot preregister for 201. This includes students who plan to take the equivalent of 101/102 during the summer.

Students need to provide evidence of satisfactory completion of summer (or other transfer) courses to Reed's Registrar's Office before SOLAR will allow them to preregister for Chem 201. No exceptions. However, I will allow students to use the following loopholes at the end of the summer/start of the Fall semester so that they can pre-register and settle their schedule and so that we can get a more accurate count of enrollment:

    • End-of-summer loophole #1: if you bring me a signed note on Th-F, Aug 23-4, from your summer introductory chemistry instructor (email is also acceptable) that says you have completed the entire intro chem sequence, lecture and labs, with grades of C- or better, I will override SOLAR's prerequisite requirement so that you can preregister for Chem 201. You will still need to file your transfer documents with the Registrar's Office ASAP.
    • End-of-summer loophole #2: if you are taking intro chem at PSU this summer, your final exam will probably be held Aug 24 so you probably won't have a final grade until classes start at Reed. If you believe that you are earning a passing grade in lecture and lab going in to your final week of PSU classes, simply ask the instructor(s) of your third term lecture and lab to email me your academic status ("status" means confirming that you passed the first two terms of intro chem lecture/lab + confirming that there is a highly likelihood that you will pass the third term lecture/lab). You will still need to file your transfer documents with the Registrar's Office ASAP once they become available.
  • New Stuff for Fall '10

Classes won’t start for another 10 days and I will be making a number of changes to this web page before then. please check back from time to time to learn about the latest changes. Friday, Aug 20, 2010

Pre-registration, wait lists, and all that …

    • You must complete the
prerequisites for Chem 201 before you can preregister. That means if
you took intro chem (the equivalent of Chem 101/102, lecture + lab) at
another school this summer, you need to provide evidence of satisfactory
completion of these courses to Reed’s Registrar’s Office before SOLAR
will allow you to preregister for Chem 201. This requirement may create difficulties for some students because it often takes a few days to process transfer requests. Here’s a shortcut: bring me a signed note on Th-F, Aug 26-7, from your introductory chemistry instructor (email is also acceptable)
that says you have completed the entire intro chem sequence, lecture and labs, with grades of C- or
      better, I will override
SOLAR’s prerequisite requirement so that you can preregister for Chem 201. posted Friday, Aug 20
    • New lab section – Friday, 1-5 PM. 69 students have preregistered for Chem 201 lecture, but only 62 for lab. The others have put their names on waiting lists (or so I hope). To accommodate everyone’s schedule, we have added a fourth lab section on Friday afternoon. It appears in SOLAR as #11096, CHEM 201 FL4. We will not be making any other changes in the lab schedule. For safety reasons lab sections are capped at 24 students so it is necessary for everyone to find a spot in the four lab sections that are now available. (see all Hours & Locations) posted Friday, Aug 20
    • New conference section – Thursday, 12-1 PM. 24 students have already preregistered for the noon conference and there might be more on a waiting list. Because “conference” can’t function in a useful way when there are more than 16 students in a room, we have added a second room (Chem 301). The Registrar will (re)assign students to particular sections and rooms to keep all conference enrollments at 16 or less. Please attend the conference + room that the Registrar assigns you to. (see all Hours & Locations) posted Tuesday, Aug 24

    Updates & New Stuff

    • Spartan Model 2 replaces plastic model kit as required item (also read) posted Friday, Aug 20
    • Luc Boisvert (visiting prof.) replaces Pat McDougal (sabbatical 2010-11) as conference and lab instructor posted Friday, Aug 20
    • A syllabus has been posted that provides information about each class and exam dates. Expect additions and other changes. posted Tuesday, Aug 24
    • The Exams page has been updated. It contains exam dates and ground rules. Links to old exams will be added later. posted Tuesday, Aug 24
    • All students should purchase a clicker on Friday, Aug 27 (if you forget, you can still purchase one the following week). Bring your clicker to all of the 9 AM lectures starting with the first class on Mon, Aug 30. See Clickers and Books & Materials for more information. posted Thursday, Aug 26
  • Pre-registration for Fall 2010

Students who want to earn one unit of credit for Chem 201 in Fall 2010 must sign up for four activities:

    • lecture (MWF 9-10 AM)
    • conference (choose from Th 9:30, 10:30, 12, 1 and always attend the same conference)
    • lab lecture (Th 6:10-7 PM)
    • lab (choose from MTuW 1-5 PM and always attend the same lab)

It is not unusual for certain conferences and labs to fill up during pre-registration; the Tu lab was particularly popular last fall. It is also not unusual for students to change their plans during the summer and want to change sections, add the course, or drop the course, during fall pre-registration. To add to the general uncertainty, I have no idea how many students will pre-register for the course in the spring.

Here are some common pre-registration requests and my customary responses:

    • I cannot override the enrollment caps on conference and lab. The lab situation is simple: we only have room for 24 students in each lab section and not one person more. The conference situation is more complicated. We will reassign students to conferences in the fall to make sure that each conference has roughly the same enrollment.
    • I cannot override the Chem 101/102 prerequisite for students who haven’t completed these courses. This includes students who plan to complete these courses during the summer. If you complete the prerequisite during the summer and your institution is “slow” to send a transcript of your summer work to Reed, have your summer instructor send me a note (email is fine) that you have passed these classes and I will override the prerequisite requirement during pre-registration in August.
    • I will approve conflicts with the lab lecture on Th evening. However, I do this only with the mutual understanding that the student accepts full responsibility for any missed material. I will not give make-up lectures, explain parts of lecture, provide copies of my lecture notes, and so on, to students who miss class because of a conflict with another activity.

If a student finds that a must-have lab or conference section closes during pre-registration, I recommend the following: first, pre-register for courses assuming that the section will stay closed (call this Plan B), and second, contact me during the August pre-registration period and explain which “closed” section you want to enter and why, i.e., give me Plan A. The Registrar and I will use our (limited) powers of persuasion to move students around and accommodate requests.

  • Chem 201-202 Transition State

    Welcome back!

Chem 202 pretty much picks up right where Chem 201 left off: same book, same rooms, same hours. There are some important changes, however, so please check out the following.

    • Lecture. My role will be reduced. Pat McDougal will take over all of the lectures and all that that entails (homework assignments, exams, and so on).
    • Conference. Pat and I will swap conference sections. He will direct the morning sessions and I will direct the afternoon sessions.
    • Lab. I will continue on in the Tuesday lab, and Pat will take over the Monday and Wednesday labs.
    • Online materials. Pat will distribute assignments in whatever way he likes best, but with only one important exception: he won’t use this website. The exception is the online lab manual. This manual includes all of the experiments currently planned for Chem 202.

If you have questions about how Chem 202 will operate, please direct them to Pat (Rm. 420, ext. 7206, Patrick.McDougal@reed.edu)

  • Q&A session for Final Exam

    Where: Rm. 301, Chemistry
    When: Sunday, Dec 13, 1:45-3:00

I decided to go with Rm. 301 because the number of students attending these Q&A sessions has fallen considerably. I hope there will be enough room. The Chem 101 people will want to use the room from 3-4 PM so please *ask* your questions during the allotted time. Don’t wait until after its over.

  • Lab schedule Th & next week

Lab continues to meet this week as normally scheduled.

Lab lecture on Thursday night, Nov 19, is cancelled.

The only lab operations scheduled for the following week, M-W, Nov 23-25, are wrapping up the acetylferrocene experiment. If students are unable to finish this experiment this week, they can perform any and all operations — run the reaction, separate the compounds on a column, analyze the results by TLC, measure melting points, or make NMR samples for us — they can do that next week during the scheduled lab periods.

Special request – my lab assistants will be in the lab starting at 1:10 PM. I will let them leave the lab, however, if no students show up by 1:30 PM. So please come on time. If you need to make up lab work, but can’t get to the lab until after 1:30, please send me an email now so that I can pass this info along to my lab assistants. Thanks

  • Schedule changes: Exam #3, HW #6, Syllabus

Since no strong objections were raised to the schedule changes that I had proposed, I have made the following changes for the upcoming exam, homework and classes (all of the appropriate online schedules have been updated to reflect these chanes):

Exam #3 – Thursday, Nov 19, in conference. Please attend conference at your normal time and location. Bring a model kit. Keep in mind that some students may have already taken the exam or will be taking the exam later than you, so please do not blurt out anything about the exam and do not discuss the exam publicly until 2 PM.

HW #6 – out late Monday, Nov 9; due Monday, Nov 16, noon; returned Wednesday, Nov 18, 9 AM.

Syllabus – I am gaining an extra lecture day on Monday, Nov 16 and this will affect the lecture schedule for the rest of the term. I will start lecturing on Chapter 10 on Monday, Nov 16. There will be two additional lectures on Chapter 10 on Wednesday, Nov 18 (note that these first two lectures are coming before exam #3) and on Friday, Nov 20. There will also be a lab lecture on Thursday, Nov 19.

  • URGENT – Change schedule for Exam #3 ???

I’ve been looking over Chapter #9 and the schedule for the next two weeks
and I’m kicking around two options in my mind.

    Option #1
Exam #3 would still be on Monday, November 16. However, if the exam were
to be held on this day, I would abbreviate the exam’s coverage of
chapter 9 topics slightly (and these topics would appear on the final
exam instead). The “abbreviated” exam would not include sections
9.6-9.8, but would include 9.1-9.5 which is the bulk of the chapter.

    Option #2

Exam #3 would be moved to Thursday, November 19, i.e., you would take
the exam during your conference hour and in your conference room. The
exam would cover all of Chapter 9 right through section 9.8. To support
this, the next homework assignment would also cover all of chapter 9 and
the due date would be extended. Monday, November 16 would just be a normal lecture (finishing chapter
    9?, starting Chapter 10).

Frankly, option #2 is a much more sensible way to proceed (but it has
never occurred to me before to use conference time in this way). I would
like to follow option #2, but because this is a major schedule change, I
would like to consult with the class first. Please let me know ASAP if
you have any objections to option #2.

  • Updates – Salicylic acid, banana oil labs, and more…

Salicylic acid experiment. You should go into lab on your own and perform the two activities needed to complete this experiment:

    1. weigh your product
    2. measure its melting “point”

These operations may be performed on any week day (9 AM – 5 PM) between now and the due date for the lab report: Friday, Oct 18, 5 PM. Work outside of these hours, or on weekends, is not permitted because of safety concerns.

Banana oil experiment. We will start, but not complete, the experiment next week. You can expect to get through the work-up and into the early phases of the distillation. Perhaps you can do even more. Most students will complete the distillation and subsequent characterization steps after Fall Break. To prepare for this lab, you should:

    1. Do the usual: read background section in lab manual, prepare your lab notebook, print and complete pre-lab activity sheet
    2. Acquaint yourself with the concepts of workup, extraction, washing, drying, proper use of separatory (“sep”) funnels. The MIT video: Workup I (18 minutes) should be watched carefully. There is also helpful material in Padias.
    3. Acquaint yourself with the concept of distillation. My slides are here. There is also helpful material in Padias.

Homework. The answers to HW #4 have been posted. My readers will do their best to get through these lengthy assignments asap, but they are both taking the Graduate Record Exams (GREs) this weekend and they need to prepare. I have given them additional time to read your work and this may delay return of your problems sets by 24 hours? We’ll see.

The next problem set will be posted sometime tomorrow, but it will not be collected. Answers will be posted next week.

Bring model kit to lecture tomorrow. And please arrive on time since we will be performing a ChemActivity related to Chapter 6.
