But there are many of us who wonder what “digital scholarship” means, or want to know more about digital tools and their use in teaching and research or how data relates to the humanities, or are curious about how Open Access affects scholarship in different disciplines. Quantitative reasoning and quantitative literacy (NNN 2014)
Earlier this month, Rich and I traveled to Carleton College to join people from 23 institutions of higher education for the annual conference of the National Numeracy Network (NNN). The NNN focuses on building quantitative literacy for all citizens, with education being central to that work. The majority of attendees were from smaller liberal arts colleges – predominantly staff, with some faculty joining.

The future of GIS in education and research (UCGIS, 2014)
While proud families and supportive friends watched the Reed College Class of 2014 officially transition to alumni, I headed to Pasadena for the 2014 UCGIS* conference. As folks chatted at pre-conference workshops** and the opening reception, I slowly realized that Reed was the lone liberal arts college in attendance.
