Pop-Up Oyster Bar!

IMG_0077.jpeg

Jon Rowley ’69 rousted ten dozen Totten Inlet oysters out of bed in Olympia to bring to Reed’s “Working Weekend,” February 3-5. This “pop-up oyster bar” appeared in the library lobby late afternoon on Saturday and was met with much enthusiasm.

Jon is a marketing consultant for Taylor Shellfish Farms, and while on campus he met Lillian Kuehl ’09, lab manager at Taylor Shellfish, for the first time. “I had heard about this Reed student that worked at the Taylor hatchery but had never met her, so it was fun to work our pop-up oyster bar with her.”  Soon enough, David Autrey ’89 and Amy Wesselman ’91 happened along with some of their Westrey wine to serve as a perfect complement for the marine feast.

Pleased that the impromptu oyster tasting was well received, Jon later commented that it “turned out to be a perfect little adjunct to Working Weekend, an example of how there is always room, with a little entrepenurial spirit, for a good idea.” Also, he was tickled that a good number of students had their first oyster that day. His old friend Hannah Fishman ’14 lent a hand, learning the art of shucking for the first time.

See photos of the lovely Totten Inlet Virginicas and Shigoku oysters, and their fans, on his Flickr page.

Alumni Ultimate Frisbee team in Phoenix

ultimate_frisbee.11.jpg

Any Arizona alumni out there?

Time to show your “school spirit” and get the Reed Alumni Ultimate Frisbee team prepped for its big tournament in Phoenix over the weekend of January 27-29, and we are kicking things off with our version of a pep rally on Friday, January 27.

The team (pictured above in 2011) will be at the Four Peaks Brewery to meet local alumni, sign autographs, and consume tournament-appropriate libations. Mike Teskey, director of alumni relations, will be there to toast the team and to buy a round of appetizers for Reedies who show up.  This will be a great opportunity to meet other area alumni and to get the intrepid warriors psyched up for their weekend battle (please forgive the obligatory bellicose sports language).

Friday, January 27

6-8:30 p.m.

Four Peaks Brew Pub

1340 E. 8th St, #104

Tempe, AZ 85281

RSVP to Mike Teskey, director of alumni relations, at teskeym@reed.edu.

Reedfayre ’12: call for Alumni College proposals

eliot_window.jpg

A message from Larry Abramson ’80:

As a member of Reed’s alumni board, I have been working with several of my colleagues in planning for Reedfayre ’12 (Reunions), which will take place from Wednesday, May 30 through Sunday, June 3. Following on the successful reformatting of Alumni College (AC) inaugurated at Centennial Reunions last year, our committee is actively planning to develop an attractive AC curriculum to offer at this year’s Reedfayre.

The purpose of my reaching out to you today is to ask for your assistance in identifying potential speakers/discussion leaders who would be interested in presenting a topic that they have a passion for and believe would attract participants. While it is easy to identify lots of potential topics, what we need are people willing to do the work to make it happen. Thus, our focus is on identifying champions willing to develop and present 60-90 minute AC “courses” for the Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday afternoon sessions.

As Reedfayre will be upon us sooner than we think, we would very much appreciate it if you would be willing to:

–Be a presenter yourself of a topic; and/or,

–Provide us with contact information of an individual(s) that might be interested in being a presenter.

If you can help, please directly contact our AC “Dean,” Jim Kahan ’64 at jimkahan@alumni.reed.edu, with a copy to me at labramson1@me.com. In the email, please write a sentence or two describing the course/discussion/presentation. Also, please note that the course should be structured such that pre-reading is optional and no materials are required.

Thank you for your time and ideas. Know that your support here will greatly contribute to another successful Alumni College!

Thank you,

Larry

Reed Alumni Holiday Party 2011

ahp_griff.12.jpg

More rapid than owls, his coursers they came.?

And he whistled and shouted, and called them by name;?

Now Diver! Now Doyle! Now Chittick and Ladd!?

On Foster! On Scholz! On Quincy in plaid!?

So up to the holiday party they flew

for dinner with friends and dancing too.

(with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)

Alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends reveled at the annual Reed Alumni Holiday Party on Saturday, December 17, 2011. View photos of the general festivities as well as individual glamour shots for download (password: reed).

Reedfayre 2012: it goes beyond 11

reu_carnival_2011.jpg

Centennial Reunions 2011 rocked. Can we repeat the vibe? Definitely.

We have taken the essential elements that made last year’s celebration so memorable and set the wheels in motion for a remarkable reprise. We are calling it Reedfayre, and it is a big alumni celebration of music, food, and ideas. Sprinkle in some spectacle and you have an event that you can’t miss:

* Toast Colin Diver and send him off into blissful presidential retirement

* Indulge in an afternoon of alumni food and drink at Gastronomy Northwest

* Add your decorative touch to the college’s first-ever Rose Festival float

And lest you think that is all that is planned, check back to see an ever growing list of temptations (we don’t want to share it all at once!). Keep an eye here and on Facebook for more sizzle as we cook up programming that honors the reunion classes as well as all Reedies and their families.

Call for Paideia ’12 classes led by alumni

A word from Reed’s Paideia czars:

We are students coordinating Paideia, and we are interested in offering a greater variety of classes this year. We would like to invite alumni to apply to teach a Paideia class on any subject you think students, faculty, and staff alike would find informative, interesting, or fun. It would be a great way to engage and connect with students.

Applications are due by Thursday, December 8. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Best,

Erin Appleby and Alison Chavez

The evolution will be mapped

“Mateo Burtch ’82 has mapped out Reed’s dominance of a corner in Eastmoreland since 1950.” (John Sheehy ’82)

Enjoy viewing this history of the Reed College campus 1950-present, as told through maps. The maps from 1950 to 1996 were collected and combined by Mateo from the college catalogues sent out to prospective students during that period.

(It has come to our attention that there exists an aerial history of campus as well!)
