Reedfayre ’12: a talent show for the ages

owl_spirit.jpg

A word from Mateo Burtch ’82:

I’ve been emceeing the talent show at Reunions practically since the days when Reed College was still the Chutney Institute of Biblical Errata, originally located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. I come back year after year for a simple reason: because I enjoy it so much, even if one year I was heavily lacerated during a demonstration on how to anger bees. Over the years we’ve had some great times and great performances. Abraham Lincoln, for example, got his start in show business here with a little something he called “The Second Inaugural Address.” Karl Marx wrote all of chapter three of Das Kapital live on our circular stage. The Wright Brothers invented the airplane during a warm-up, while Muhammad Ali bested an unsuspecting George Foreman with a vicious right uppercut during an all-heavyweight performance of The Mikado in 1974.

Okay, I’m kidding, of course. The Reedfayre Talent Show is, as Lincoln put it, by Reedies, of Reedies, and for Reedies (and their friends and families). We’ve had Reedies telling stories, singing songs, reciting poetry, cracking jokes, playing music singly and in groups, juggling, acting, dancing—pretty much any human activity you can name that doesn’t involve sponges, hamsters, and fire extinguishers, and those are probably on their way. Some of the acts have crushed it like a boss right from the start, while a few others have wobbled gamely through their specialties, but all of them have received a warm response from a friendly and enthusiastic audience. Whether you’re a timorous wee beastie or a slab of well-cooked showbiz ham, I encourage you to sign up (first for Reedfayre, then for the talent show proper, once you arrive on campus!) and show off your talents—weird, wonderful, or both.

Or come just to see the hidden gifts of your fellow Reedies (or even late-model “Reedites”!). It’s a great time. Fire extinguishers not provided.

"Get the stories before they're gone."

                                  –Gary Snyder '51

Dear Reed Comrade:

A love of stories is what initially drew me, and hundreds of others, to the Reed Oral History Project. College stories of course can be clichés in themselves–the student's coming of age, the stern but nurturing professor, the raucous parties.

But not at Reed. Here, things are different–even when it comes time to parties.

One consistent theme in the stories that Reedies told was of arriving on campus and for the first time in their lives having a sense of coming home–of experiencing the freedom to be themselves, both socially and intellectually, that they had not found anywhere else.

Now, I invite you to come back home to help me celebrate our collective efforts to capture the story of Reed.

After 13 years in the making, with a cast of hundreds, we will be unveiling the book Comrades of the Quest: An Oral History of Reed College at Reunions '12: Reedfayre on June 1, 5 p.m. on the north lawn of Eliot, the site of Reed's very first commencements.

It will be "Comrades Day" all day, with storytelling (featuring our Babson Award winner, Cricket Parmalee '67), a special book-signing reception, and of course, the big unveiling. For a sneak preview of the book, please go to:

http://comradesofthequest.org

Register for Reedfayre by end of day on May 1, and you will be entered into a drawing for a free copy of Comrades of the Quest (five copies will be given away).

Hope to see you in June!

Destination Portland: be a tourist!

ao_postcardrack.jpgYes, New York Times, Portland prides itself on "all things independent and artisan," but we knew that before a certain IFC series that starts with a "P" catapulted our fair city into the national spotlight. Even if you eschew the fawning praise of this "36 Hours in Portland" feature, please consider that your college town has a lot to offer as a vacation destination… so why not combine this cultural experience with a bit of Reed reunion action for the ultimate getaway?

From small plates to food carts, craft brews to cocktails so smart you need a thesaurus to translate the mixology involved, the dining and drinking scene in P-town is beyond compare. You don't have to put a bird on it, but you won't want to miss Portland's flock of renowned restaurants, including Le Pigeon, Little Bird, and Aviary, where Sarah Pliner '94 is a rising star chef. Many other Reedies have made highly respected names for themselves in the local foodie community, and I'll be compiling a list that we can work from/eat off in time for Reunions '12: Reedfayre (suggestions welcome!).

In the meantime, whet your appetite for culinary excess balanced by outdoor exploits and family-friendly adventures like the Rose Festival. It is the most wonderful weather time of year in the Pacific Northwest and no accident that we scheduled Reedfayre for May 30-June 3! Register now to partake in the fun, on campus and beyond…

Comedy showcase at Reedfayre ’12

owl_n_abbot.jpgAs you’ve likely heard, Rex the King requests your presence at an event befitting the end of a glorious centennial year, Reunions ’12: Reedfayre, May 30-June 3! Have you heard the one about the prank on these humorous, impish figures that resulted in his identification with Reed President Norman F. Coleman?

An excerpt from the archives:

rex_king.jpg

“In 1930, a student, or students, placed paper labels on the gargoyles as they lay on the lawn before being raised into place, according to Ellen Knowlton Johnson '39, Reed registrar, who lived on campus as a child. The prank precipitated a long-lasting rumor that each gargoyle represented a member of the Reed faculty of that time and that the king represented President Norman F. Coleman.”

(Thanks to Gay Walker ’69 for this scoop!)

Speaking of humorous hi-jinks, we’ve got a great comedy lineup slated for Reedfayre ’12, featuring Nato Green ’97, Dr. Demento, aka Barry Hansen ’63, and Paul Anderson ’92 (Dr. Demento: “’Microsoft Word’ by Paul Anderson ’92 was a big hit on my show in 1994/95—it was the #8 most-requested song of the year in 1995.”)

Other amusements that you can expect at Reedfayre ‘12:

–Reed’s Rose Festival Float

–A feast of food and drink at Gastronomy Northwest

–Reed musicians sharing their talents

–Kaul Auditorium transformed into a roller-skating palace

–A multi-faceted Alumni College

–The traditional parade of classes with a few new twists

Don’t be an impudent court jester, populate the who's coming list with your honorable name by signing up today!

Reed Centennial event in Israel

Don Green ’54, has organized the event along with those in Israel. He will be visiting his son’s family and following up on a chance meeting in 2010 with Ncoom Gilbar ’79, who led a tour of Shilo, an ancient site believed to be where the Jews lived for 300 years after the Exodus. Gilbar’s mom also went to Reed, Jackie Glasser Gilbert ’56.

Half-price lodging at Reedfayre ’12

TheGrove_sm.jpeg

Recognizing that many alumni and their families travel a fair distance to get here for Reunions ’12: Reedfayre, May 30-June 3, we are pleased to offer half-price lodging in the dorms (for any/all nights that week). It is not Club Med, but the price is right: $25 per bed for the duration, if you register online before March 1!

You may be pleasantly surprised by the design and comfort of Reed’s newer dorms (now called “residence halls”), especially those built in the last 10 years. Five new structures were built in 2007, sustainably built and designed as smaller, more intimate houses after the example of Anna Mann. Also, there is a gorgeous new Spanish House that completes the cluster of language houses, now connected by an inviting outdoor plaza.

LangHouses_sm.jpeg

Sure, everyone wants to stay in Old Dorm Block, but read about all of the unique residence halls on campus these days. Each room includes a single bed, towels, and linens, and access to mixed-gender communal bathrooms.

We make every effort to place alumni from the same decade in the same dorm, but encourage you to register early for best results. Couples and families will be housed in the same room or in connecting rooms. Conspire with your tribe and let them know of this great deal!

Reedfayre ’12: a play for peasants

The Reedfayre Play Setting: The year is 2012, and Reed College is concluding its centennial year of celebrations. The noble king Rex is desirous of a memorable finale and an auspicious beginning of a new century for his college kingdom.

Rex: Serve me up an event befitting the end of a glorious centennial year!

alumnimascot_sm.jpg

Humble (Alumni Relations) servants:  My Lord, here is a mere sampling, a taste of what is planned and what participants can expect at Reunions ’12: Reedfayre, May 30-June 3.

  • Decorate Reed’s first-ever Rose Festival Float–it will make Eleanor’s boat look most puny.
  • Feast on food and drink at Gastronomy Northwest: a showcase of foodie (and drinkie) Reedies. Pass the mead!
  •  Dance, tap, or simply relish the sweet sounds of all the Reed musicians who will share their talents.
  • Don a pair of lace-up boots and twirl around as Kaul Auditorium is magically transformed into a roller-skating palace.
  • Nourish your mind as Reed’s gentry gather and share their intellectual prowess in a multi-faceted Alumni College.
  • Partake in the parade of classes. Represent your class and/or cheer those who have come before or after in an energetic celebration.

And much more is planned, sire. Does his majesty approve? What are your entreaties?

Working Weekend works it!

Working-Wknd-vlh.jpg

“Now, Reed might not be the first place you think of when it comes to startup activity, but fact of the matter is that that small liberal arts college has had a huge impact on the Portland startup scene. Just off the top of my head, Urban Airship, Puppet Labs, AppFog, LuckySort, Stayhound, and Rogue Ventures all boast Reedies as founders.”

This statement on the Silicon Florist blog speaks well to the innovative side of Reedies and leads into praise for our inaugural Working Weekend, which took place earlier this month.  It was not your average career-networking event, but it was a remarkable success!  The weekend was organized by nearly 80 alumni volunteers, including ringleader Adam Riggs ’95, the Life Beyond Reed committee of the alumni board, and the offices of alumni & parent relations and career services.

Working-Wknd-vols.jpg

Alumni from around the world offered advice and insight in a variety of formats, including industry panels, one-on-one appointments, and even a “StartUp lab” for burgeoning entrepreneurs.  As reported by the Quest, the winner of the StartUp lab competition was Emotitron, “a business platform for software that can analyze human emotions using voice patterns.”  Also, there were oysters!

Breakdown of those who attended the weekend:

The total of attendees (and participants) on panels and at Reed StartUp was 379: 232 students, 134 alumni, and 13 guests.

There were 293 discrete humans: 184 students, 96 alumni, 13 guests. Of the alumni attendees, 71 were presenters or otherwise involved in the program planning.

Class breakdown of discrete participants shows that 66 seniors showed up (22% of the senior class); juniors added 43 (14% of the class), sophomores added 44 (9.8% of a very large class), and 30 first-year students (8% of the class) participated.

Decades:

6 alumni from the ’60s

11 from the ’70s

14 from the ’80s

39 from the ’90s

31 from 2000 to 2011 (15 from 2010 & 2011)

Portland is also getting some national attention as a great place to start tech-oriented businesses, as noted on Reed’s admission blog. Cheers to the spirit of invention on campus and beyond!
