Gastronomy Northwest needs you!

For Reedfayre 2013, June 12-16, we are continuing the tradition of featuring Reed-related food and drink with our annual Gastronomy Northwest showcase on Saturday afternoon, June 15, which offers samplings from chefs, bakers, growers, harvesters, vintners, brewers, distillers, and others in the Reed community who grace the food industry. If you are involved in the world of food and would like to share your edible wares, please contact Mela Kunitz ’87 at mela.kunitz@reed.edu or 503/777-7789 for more details.

The spectacle of the boar

DSC_3834c.jpg
Students, we’d like to introduce you to the spectacle of the boar as part of Reed’s alumni holiday party. On Saturday night, December 8, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the college will continue a tradition that has been going on since the 1920s. The elements really are quite simple: guests get all gussied up and enjoy a holiday feast. At the end of the meal, a bagpiper announces the arrival of the boar’s head procession.

Imagine 15 people wearing black hoods and robes, carrying a boar’s head and torches, and singing a song proclaiming their appreciation and adoration for the feast it provided—kind of a Charles Dickens meets Lord of the Flies thing! Check out historic footage on our ReediEnews Tumblr.

ReedAHP09_236.jpg

For your enjoyment Bon Appétit will offer students the same holiday entrée that alumni are receiving: prime rib or butternut squash ravioli.  Then at 8 p.m., we invite you to gather in and around the Commons Café for a round of holiday desserts (compliments of Alumni & Parent Relations). The aforementioned bagpiper and boar’s head procession will make their hallowed appearance.  Finally, from 8:15 until 11:30 p.m., The Pranksters, an 18-piece big band, will play swing music for all to enjoy in the S.U.

We hope that you are able to join us!

–Alumni & Parent Relations

P.S. We regret any inconvenience caused by the fact that the S.U. will be periodically unavailable during preparations for this event on Saturday. Thank you for your understanding.

Reed Offspring at Orientation

New Reedies with alumni parents (or other relatives) qualify as members of a prestigious organization fondly referred to as O.R.G.Y (Offspring of Reed Generations of Yesteryear). They, along with family members, were invited to join other Reed legacies for a group photo on Wednesday, August 22. Gorgeous weather graced this photo shoot on the chapel steps, and everyone received an O.R.G.Y button to wear proudly!

Here’s a picture of some Reed alumni and their excited/nervous/non-plussed Reedie progeny (future alumni!).

An epic book event that travels

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for comrades_ad.jpg

In the tradition of…

The Iliad
The Bible
Paradise Lost
and Moby Dick

comes the epic (and engaging) story of the unusual (and noble) community:

Comrades of the Quest: The Oral History of Reed College

Join us for an evening with author John Sheehy ’82, whose newly released Comrades of the Quest chronicles the colorful cultural and social history of a band of young and fiercely unorthodox West Coast intellectuals and of the upstart institution that nurtured them–Reed College.

John will both share tales from the book and elicit tales from the audience, in a highly interactive gathering. No homework is required, and there will NOT be a quiz! Mike Teskey, from the alumni office, will have copies for sale (special promotional prices and Comrades t-shirts available too!). Light refreshments provided.

Reed Switchboard Hearts 2012

switchboard_5.12.jpg

The Reed Switchboard is a volunteer effort aimed at fostering contact between current students and alumni. We've partnered with artist Lucy Bellwood '12 to bring you the Switchboard Hearts 2012 project. During Reunions '12: Reedfayre, Lucy will be on campus taking photos of Reedies and their passions on Saturday, noon to 5 p.m., outside between Old Dorm Block and Eliot.

Alumni: what are you passionate about? If a current student called you, what would you want to talk to them about? Who are the Reedies you'd like to connect with and what are their interests? The photos we take during Reedfayre will be posted online later this summer so that everyone interested in, say, "museums" can learn about their shared interests and connect with each other.  Join the photo shoot!

For more information, send email to reedswitchboard@gmail.com.

The great griffin float emerges!

griffin_wire.jpg

Dearest Comrades:

I have always wanted to write one of these letters, and they're finally letting me! And yes, it has been censored so you will have to use your decoders to get the real message. Reedfayre '12 (the event formally known as Reunions) is upon us, and there is a special treat for all: the griffin float! If you haven't heard already, Reed is entering a float in the Portland Rose Festival's Grand Floral Parade. All of the floats have traditionally been built by one company, but of course as Reedies we wanted to build our own.

I have been privileged to work with the group of "local" Reedies (for whom the apple didn't land far from the tree), and we have been working on it for a while now. It is pretty awesome. The fun never stops! I promise anyone who shows up to lend a hand a ride around campus. There will be fun and games, food and drink, and a late night viewing of Animal House while sitting on the float. The Rose Festival parade is the weekend after Reedfayre, and I would like to encourage everyone to stay the week, help decorate the float with flowers and come cheer or participate in the parade on Saturday, June 9.

It has been a fabulous time building this amazing vehicle, please come back for a ride down memory lane!* I know it is getting close, but if you are at all able to return for Reedfayre, this will be a most memorable experience, I assure you.

Sincerely looking forwards to a fabulous weekend,

–Rob Mack '93

*See one of Rob's earliest conveyances, the MOSPUD, as well as other creations from Renn Fayres past.

Career opportunities at Reedfayre ’12

Amidst the connecting and reconnecting of once and future Reed friends, a new element is taking hold at Reunions ’12: Reedfayre: career and job-related programming. We are pleased to offer a full panoply of programs for those interested in helping or being helped in the job hunt.

•Advice from Don Asher ’83

•Reed Switchboard

•Birds of a Feather

•Reed Career Network

Don-Asher-at-Blackboard.jpg

Guidance and advice from the master: Don Asher ’83

Reed is fortunate to call Don one of our own. He is the author of numerous best-selling books on subjects relating to getting jobs or getting into grad school. Even the most seasoned professionals will enjoy his informative and helpful presentations.

Saturday, 10 a.m.

Strategies to Gain Admission to Highly Competitive Graduate Programs with Don Asher ’83, who, he says, “accidentally wrote the best-selling guide to the graduate admissions process” which was “accidentally” the best-selling guide for 18 straight years (4th ed. in press). PhD, business, law, medicine, pharm.D., rocket science, part-time-PhD-while-you-pursue-your-massively-successful-day-job; whatever your goal, come to this talk on how to get in, get funded, etc.

Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

The Hidden Job Market & Networking with the Rich & Famous, or, How to Tap Anybody, with Don Asher ’83, author of 12 books on careers and higher education, including the ground-breaking Cracking the Hidden Job Market and Who Gets Promoted, Who Doesn’t & Why (named business book of the year in a national column). More than half the job market is invisible. Whether you are a recent grad trying to get a rung on the ladder, a returning parent with a black hole in your career, an enrollee in a federal witness protection program needing a career change pronto, or a retiree seeking meaningful work on your own terms, this talk is for you. This talk is co-branded and co-sponsored by the Reed College Career Center.

Get connected to the Reed Switchboard

Thumbnail image for switchboard_5.12.jpgThis creative and energetic cohort of young alumni is making news with their novel brand of outreach. This is your chance to get connected and communicate your passions (to actually be photographed in front of a calligraphic pronouncement of your passion!). Switchboard really made an impact with graduating seniors during commencement weekend, and they will turn their attention to alumni during Reedfayre.  Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, send email to reedswitchboard@gmail.com.

Birds of a Feather

Somewhat strategic, somewhat arbitrarily, we categorized job fields, divided them up, and put a sign on ’em. If you want to connect with folks who work in that job field, here is your chance to mix and mingle. No agenda, really: just connecting people with similar interests.

•Friday, June 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: arts & culture, business, and health & wellness

•Saturday, June 2, 11 a.m.-noon: education, journalism & public affairs, and creative services

•Saturday, June 2, 2:30-3:30 p.m.: law, public & social/community services, and science & technology

Help Build the Reed Career Network

Use Reedfayre as an opportunity to strengthen all of your Reed connections. When you join the Reed Career Network (RCN), you join more than 2,100 Reed alumni who share information about themselves in the password-protected, online alumni list. RCN members highlight their areas of expertise, education, and tell a bit of their stories in the profile section so that students and other alumni may learn how one gets from a Reed education to so many amazing destinations. Career Services staff will be on site at Redfayre Central to engage with alumni and to enlist your help in strengthening the network (members of the network get a sticker to identify as such!).

Reed’s Rose Festival Float

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ReedRoseFestFloat_1936.jpgWith Reed students’ propensity for recombinant construction and conveyance, it is no surprise that the college entered a float in Portland’s Rose Festival Parade as early as 1936.  While the details are murky, we have this one photo, as well as this plaque commemorating Reed’s third-place “prize” position.

RoseFestivalAwardReed1936.jpg

Fast forward to 2012, the close of our centennial year, and a merry band of intrepid engineers is hard at work on an automated griffin for the new century!  Rob Mack ’93 and Mike Teskey, director of alumni relations, have led the effort to craft a unique float to roll in Portland’s 100th Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, June 9.

float_rendering2.jpg

Assisted by Zac Perry, canyon restoration specialist, Ben Lund ’93 from mail services, Dan Schafer ’92, Martha Richards ’92, Lars Fjelstad ’92, and other alumni, this group of volunteers has been hammering out the creation over the past several weeks.  See Dan’s photos, as well as this artist’s rendering that serves as inspiration and imagine a griffin that can flap its wings (and possibly more!).

An early model got a test run at Renn Fayre, delivering the Reed Meat Smoke victuals to the feast!  There is yet more work to be done, and we welcome help from all members of the Reed community.  Stay tuned for a decorating sign-up sheet to be available soon; we’ll begin the beautification process at Reunions ’12: Reedfayre, so sign up today!

Appointment with the Doctor: Demento & other music at Reedfayre ’12

demento_boombox.jpgW-w-wind up your Reunions!  Dr. Demento (Barry Hansen '63) here, calling all Reedies to join us at Reunions ’12: Reedfayre!  It's like Renn Fayre, but with better wine and less mayhem. You'll greet old friends, meet new ones, and say farewell to President Colin Diver after ten sweet years.

We'll have great music made by your fellow Reedies: electric energy with Ghost Animal, Surf Maggots, Slutty Hearts, and Hollow Dog; acoustic magic with Kyle Alden (Thayer) '80 and the Stumptown Family Ramblers; and bluesy, jazzy standards with Sweet Baboo.

There will be folk dancing in the SU (Jim Kahan '64 is back, with his 2012 knee). We’ll dance to "Stop Making Sense" too! And then there's Laugh Track on Friday night in the chapel with Nato Green '97 (of Laughter Against the Machine), Paul Anderson '92 (singing "On the Night Bus" and his other comedy songs), awesome sleight-of-hand with Zack Dubnoff  '91, and Dr. Demento's Greatest Hits with yours truly.

Learn more about these bands and see the full schedule for all that is happening May 30 through June 3 at http://reedfayre.reed.edu/

You have an appointment!
