THE
ROYAL
CATHEDRAL
According to the local tradition the church was first constructed during the period of Emperor Constantine, in the 4th century A.D. The building that we admire today was built in 1312 by king Frederick II of Aragon, with building materials from the temple dedicated to the Venus of ERICE. Throughout the centuries the sacred temple was readapted many times. In 1853 the interior of the church collapsed. The reconstruction began almost immediately and in ten years time the Royal Church was reborn in its splendid appearance which represents a precious example of neo-gothic art.
